Marcus Rashford's Future in Doubt as Barcelona Weighs Transfer Decision
Manchester United are already sketching out their summer business, buoyed by Michael Carrick’s push towards a Champions League return. The club’s recruitment plans hinge on appointing a permanent manager, but one dilemma is already waiting on the desk of whoever walks into the job: Marcus Rashford.
The United forward, currently on loan at Barcelona after previous time at Aston Villa, has spent the season talking like a man who wants to stay in Catalonia. Barcelona hold a £26 million option to buy. Rashford has never hidden how much that appeals to him.
He has long been a lightning rod for debate at Old Trafford, his future questioned after slipping out of favour under former boss Ruben Amorim and making his last United appearance back in December 2024. Since then, his career has played out in different colours.
At Barcelona, Rashford has been busy enough on paper. Across all competitions for his parent club this term, he has clocked 43 appearances, scoring 12 goals and supplying 13 assists. When asked in October whether he wanted the move to become permanent, he didn’t hesitate.
“Oh yeah, for sure,” he told ESPN. “I'm enjoying this football club and I think for anybody who loves football, Barcelona is one of the key clubs in the history of the game. For a player it is an honour."
That sounded like a man closing the door on Old Trafford. Now, it might be creaking open again.
A report from Spanish outlet Marca claims Rashford is one of five players Barcelona plan to move on in the next window, described as having “completed a cycle” at the club. The suggestion is stark: Barcelona are leaning towards not triggering the £26m clause, despite his public desire to stay.
The reasoning, according to the report, lies in performances that have “left mixed impressions” inside the club. Rashford is not alone. Veteran striker Robert Lewandowski is also listed among the expected departures, alongside Andreas Christensen, Marc Casado and Frenkie de Jong, as Barcelona prepare another summer of reshaping.
If that stance holds, United suddenly have a decision to make. A 28-year-old England international, still under contract, returning from Barcelona with a point to prove and a new manager to impress. A U-turn nobody at Carrington was banking on a few months ago.
While Rashford’s future hangs in the balance, United and Barcelona are already butting heads on another front.
Barcelona join United in chase for £34m Brazilian prodigy
The two giants are circling the same teenage talent. Eduardo Conceicao, the highly rated Palmeiras forward and Brazil U17 international, has become one of the most talked-about youngsters in South America.
Manchester United are reported by Brazilian outlet UOL to be ready to put around £34m on the table to land the 16-year-old. Manchester City are also watching closely, adding another heavyweight to the queue.
Palmeiras know exactly what they have. The club are said to value Conceicao at roughly £43.5m, even though he has not yet made his first-team debut. The message is clear: the hype comes at a premium.
Barcelona have now been named among the clubs seriously tracking the teenager, setting up a potential tug-of-war with United in the months ahead. Any deal would be a long play. Conceicao would remain at Palmeiras until December 2027, when he turns 18 and can make the move.
So United could head into the summer facing a familiar face returning from Barcelona and a future star they might have to wrestle away from the same club. One established England international coming back through the door, one Brazilian wonderkid still out of reach.
The next manager at Old Trafford won’t be short of big calls.
