Baleba Joins Manchester United for £70m
Manchester United have finally got their man. After a long chase and months of speculation, the Red Devils have completed the signing of Brighton midfielder Baleba in a deal worth up to £70 million.
United will pay an initial £65m, with a further £5m tied to performance-related add-ons. It is a fee that underlines how firmly the club believe the 22-year-old Cameroon international can reshape their midfield.
He has signed a contract running until 2031, and United have built in an option to extend it by a further year. This is not a short-term fix. It is a long-term bet on a player they have tracked closely.
A pursuit finally ends
Baleba has been on United’s radar for some time, regularly linked with a move to Old Trafford since his emergence at Brighton. Club scouts, according to those inside the dressing room, have been firm admirers.
Bruno Fernandes lifted the curtain on just how long the interest has been brewing. Speaking at the PFA Awards after being named the 2026 Players’ Player of the Year, the United captain could barely hide his enthusiasm.
"He's a very energetic player. Strong physically, he can push us up the pitch driving the ball," Fernandes said. "Young and exciting, the club have been following him for two years."
That blend of power and drive is exactly what United have been missing in too many flat performances. Now they believe they have found it.
Premier League-hardened at 22
Baleba does not arrive as a gamble from an untested league. He comes with three full seasons of Premier League experience, having joined Brighton from Lille in 2023 for an initial £23.2m.
At the Amex, he built a reputation as a dynamic, front-foot midfielder, capable of carrying the ball through the lines and handling the physical demands of English football. United are paying for that education now.
His signing completes a sweeping rebuild of United’s midfield this window. Andrey Santos has come in from Chelsea. Youri Tielemans has arrived from Aston Villa. Now Baleba joins them to give Michael Carrick a completely reshaped engine room.
Carrick’s challenge
The timing matters. United have stumbled out of the blocks.
On the opening weekend, Santos and Tielemans both started alongside Fernandes, but United slumped to a 2-0 defeat away to newly promoted Hull City. A result that jarred, and a performance that raised early questions.
So the stakes for Baleba’s integration are high. Carrick needs him to slot in quickly, to add legs, aggression and control in the middle of the pitch. United cannot afford a slow burn.
The club have committed major money and a near-decade of contract to a player they see as central to their next cycle. The chase is over. Now comes the real test: can Baleba be the driving force that drags United’s season back on track?
