Marcus Rashford's Future at Barcelona in Doubt Amid Gordon Deal

Marcus Rashford’s Barcelona future has been thrown into doubt, and the Premier League sharks have started to circle.

What looked like a straightforward permanent move after a productive loan has been complicated by one name: Anthony Gordon.

Gordon deal muddies the waters

Rashford’s season in Catalonia was solid. Fourteen goals, fourteen assists, and long spells where he looked at ease in Hansi Flick’s system. Barcelona have a €30m option to buy and, on paper, it is a bargain for a player of his pedigree.

But the club’s hierarchy is hesitating.

Flick has pushed hard for the deal to be completed, urging the board to keep Rashford. Yet the mood in the corridors of power at the Nou Camp has shifted with the imminent arrival of Gordon from Newcastle United. As reported, senior figures at Barcelona accept that bringing in Gordon makes keeping Rashford “more complicated”.

Barcelona have moved aggressively for Gordon, hijacking what had seemed a near-done move to Bayern Munich. A £70m fee has been agreed with Newcastle, with add-ons potentially taking the package to £80m. Fabrizio Romano has reported that Gordon is due to land in Barcelona today, with medical tests scheduled this afternoon.

That move changes everything for Rashford.

Rashford waits, deadline looms

According to The Athletic, sources close to Rashford insist they have not been informed of any final decision and still believe there is a route to staying at Barcelona next season, even with Gordon’s arrival.

Flick wants him. Others are unconvinced.

The club must move quickly. Manchester United have set a June 15 deadline for Barcelona to trigger the €30m option. Barcelona, for their part, are reluctant to commit to the £26m figure and would prefer to negotiate another loan instead. So far, United have shown no interest in reworking the terms.

Behind that stance lies another clear reality: United do not intend to reintegrate Rashford under Michael Carrick. INEOS are prepared to move on and will have to find a different buyer if Barcelona step away.

Premier League giants circle

That uncertainty has drawn attention back across the Channel.

The Daily Mail report that Aston Villa, Tottenham and Arsenal have all discussed the possibility of a move for Rashford. At this stage, these are conversations rather than formal bids, but they signal a growing sense that the England international could be prised away from Old Trafford if Barcelona walk away.

For clubs with Champions League ambitions and a need for a versatile forward, a 26-year-old with Rashford’s record at a cut price is a rare opportunity. Arsenal are constantly searching for extra firepower in the final third. Villa, under Unai Emery, are building a high-tempo, front-foot side. Tottenham want more goals and more pace around their attack.

All three can smell a situation developing.

Milan swap talk adds another twist

There is also a continental subplot. A potential swap deal with AC Milan has been floated, which would see Rafael Leao head to Old Trafford. United are understood to be admirers of the Portugal international, with reports suggesting Milan have slashed his asking price from £86m to £43m.

At this stage, it is an idea rather than a negotiation, but it underlines how open United are to using Rashford as a key piece in a wider rebuild.

Rashford’s preference is clear

Through all of this noise, one thing has remained consistent. As the Daily Mail note, Rashford’s dream is to stay with Flick’s Barcelona.

He has settled on the pitch, found a manager who trusts him and a stage that suits his game. Yet that dream now rests on a board wrestling with finances, squad balance and the impact of a huge outlay on Gordon.

The clock is ticking towards June 15. Barcelona must decide whether Rashford is part of their future or a luxury they can no longer afford. If they hesitate for too long, the decision may be taken out of their hands — and the next chapter of his career could be written in north London, Birmingham, Milan, or somewhere else entirely.
