Manchester United Face Sabah in Historic Champions League Night at Old Trafford
Manchester United Host Sabah in a Landmark Champions League Clash
Thursday evening will see Manchester United welcoming Sabah to Old Trafford, marking the return of the Champions League to their home ground for the first time since 2023. This encounter is special, as the two clubs have never met before.
A First-Ever Encounter with an Azerbaijani Club
Sabah, established only in 2017, represents a fresh challenge for the Red Devils. No club from Azerbaijan has faced Manchester United until now, making this a historic fixture. While Qarabağ FK remains the most seasoned Azerbaijani side in European competitions, having reached the knockout rounds of the Champions League last season, it was their first taste of such success—and they were decisively beaten by Newcastle United.
Sabah have made recent strides in Europe, competing in the Conference and Europa Leagues, but advancing beyond qualifying rounds in the Champions League is a new milestone for them.
Champions League Debuts Await Many United Players
Since Manchester United last appeared in the Champions League—suffering a 1-0 defeat to Bayern Munich in December 2023—several squad members have yet to experience the tournament.
- Bryan Mbeumo, currently in great form, will be playing in this competition for the first time.
- Goalkeeper Senne Lammens also steps into the Champions League spotlight for the first time.
- Defender Leny Yoro, who has European experience limited to the Conference League with LOSC Lille and the Europa League with United, will make his Champions League debut.
Michael Carrick’s Impeccable European Record as Manager
Michael Carrick enjoyed a decorated playing career in the Champions League, clinching the trophy in 2008 and reaching finals in 2009 and 2011 with Manchester United. His managerial experience in Europe is limited but flawless so far.
During his caretaker stint in 2021, he led the team to a crucial 2-0 victory away at Villarreal. This match against Sabah will be Carrick’s first European game managing at Old Trafford, adding another layer of significance to the night.
