Manchester United Targets David Raum After Lewis Hall Snub
Manchester United’s search for a new left-back has taken a sharp turn towards Germany, with RB Leipzig’s David Raum emerging as a leading target after Newcastle United shut the door on any move for Lewis Hall.
United have made strengthening the left side of their defence a clear priority in the final weeks of the window. Luke Shaw is into the last year of his contract at Old Trafford, and the club want genuine competition rather than a stop-gap. Hall had been internally signed off as an ideal option, but Newcastle’s stance has been blunt: after a summer of high-profile exits at St James’ Park, he is not for sale.
That refusal has forced United to look elsewhere. The focus has quickly settled on Raum, a player they know, and one who, crucially, knows them.

Raum, widely regarded as one of the Bundesliga’s standout left-backs, is entering the final year of his deal at RB Leipzig. On paper, his contract carries a release clause of around £34 million. Jason Wilcox, United’s director of football, has effectively conceded defeat in the chase for Hall for this window. Newcastle’s position has left little room for negotiation, and United’s recruitment department is now expected to accelerate their efforts to secure an alternative before the deadline.
In Raum, they have a candidate who arrives with both pedigree and powerful backing from inside the club.
United’s director of recruitment, Christopher Vivell, worked closely with Raum at RB Leipzig and has long been an admirer. Speaking in 2024 about the defender’s development, Vivell highlighted the full-back’s rapid rise and complete skill set, praising his pace, dynamism, ball-striking and threat from set pieces and crosses.
Those qualities are exactly what United have been missing when Shaw has been unavailable. Raum brings more than just defensive stability; he offers a consistent outlet on the overlap, a sharp delivery from wide areas and a proven record at the highest level.
The Germany international has been capped 39 times since 2021, a tally that underlines both his consistency and his status in a fiercely competitive national setup. He has “been around the block”, as those close to him put it, and at 28 he would arrive at Old Trafford with the blend of experience and prime years that top clubs covet.
For United, the equation is simple. The Hall route is blocked. The need for a high-level left-back is urgent. Raum has said yes.
