Manchester United Targets Aurélien Tchouaméni as Casemiro Replacement

Manchester United have circled back to Aurélien Tchouaméni, refusing to let the Real Madrid midfielder slip off their radar in a summer that has already brought one rejection.

Casemiro’s move to Inter Miami has blown a hole straight through the centre of United’s team. For all the Brazilian’s decline, he was still the side’s only true specialist holding midfielder. His departure has sharpened the club’s focus: they do not just want another body in midfield, they need a new anchor.

United sounded out Tchouaméni in the winter and again at the start of the current window. Each time, the answer was the same: Real Madrid had no intention of letting him go. According to reports, the France international even moved close to signing an extension at the Bernabéu, a clear signal that his future lay in Spain.

Yet the door has not fully closed. United have returned with another enquiry, aware that elite, ready-made defensive midfielders in Tchouaméni’s age bracket barely exist on the market. He remains firmly on their shortlist as they search for a long-term replacement for Casemiro.

On paper, the fit is obvious. Tchouaméni is young, physically dominant and tactically disciplined, a midfielder who can sit in front of the back four, break up play and give structure to a team that has too often looked stretched and exposed. He offers the kind of balance United’s recruitment team have been trying to restore for years.

The recent arrivals of André Santos and Youri Tielemans point in a different direction. Both lean naturally towards the attacking side of midfield, players who want to progress the ball and join in higher up the pitch. Tchouaméni is cut from another cloth: a natural defensive midfielder, comfortable doing the dirty work and letting others shine.

There is, however, a major obstacle. José Mourinho is counting on Tchouaméni as a central piece of his Real Madrid plans for the 2026–2027 season. The Portuguese coach views him as part of the club’s medium-term core, not a dispensable asset to cash in on.

That stance makes United’s pursuit a daunting one. Prising Tchouaméni away from a Madrid side that sees him as integral will demand more than interest and admiration. It will take a bid that forces a rethink in the Spanish capital — or a player willing to push for a move of his own.
