Manchester United have moved into position for one of the Premier League’s most influential young attackers, with Morgan Rogers firmly on their radar ahead of a major summer rebuild.
The Aston Villa forward, 23, is understood to be “in the mix” for a move to Old Trafford once the season ends, despite signing a new six-year contract only last November. United’s recruitment team have been tracking him closely, aware that this might be the moment to strike before his price climbs even higher.
They are not alone.
Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal are all long-standing admirers of Rogers and are expected to rival United if Villa open the door to a sale. The interest reflects the scale of his impact at Villa Park: Rogers has been directly involved in almost a third of Villa’s 42 league goals this season, scoring eight and assisting five in 31 appearances.
For a player still shaping his peak years, that output has turned heads at the top of the division and beyond. His form has put him on course to make Thomas Tuchel’s World Cup squad, a rapid rise that only sharpens the sense that this summer could define the next phase of his career.
A £100m question for Villa
Rogers may have committed his future to Villa on paper, but he has not closed off the prospect of a move. His priority is clear: he wants to be part of a side that consistently competes for major trophies.
That ambition comes at a price. Any club trying to prise him away will have to navigate Villa’s hard stance and deep contract security. The fee, according to reports, could even surpass the £100 million Aston Villa received from Manchester City for Jack Grealish in 2021.
Villa have every reason to drive a hard bargain. Since arriving from Middlesbrough in February 2024, Rogers has become a central pillar of their attack, racking up 114 appearances in all competitions with 27 goals and 24 assists. Those numbers, allied to his age and contract length, put him firmly in the “elite asset” bracket.
United know this is not a bargain hunt. It is a statement signing or nothing.
Old Trafford braced for midfield upheaval
The pursuit of Rogers comes against the backdrop of a significant overhaul at Old Trafford, particularly in midfield.
Casemiro has already confirmed he will leave when his contract expires in June, taking with him experience, leadership and a sizeable wage from United’s books. Around him, uncertainty swirls. Manuel Ugarte’s future is under scrutiny after a season of limited minutes under Michael Carrick, with Fabrizio Romano reporting interest from Italy.
United are preparing to reshape the core of their team. Newcastle pair Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali are on their list of potential reinforcements, while Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson remains a long-term target. The message is unmistakable: the club is ready to change the profile and personality of its midfield.
Rogers, though primarily an attacker, fits into that broader vision. He offers versatility between the lines, creativity in the final third and the sort of pressing energy that modern coaches demand from their forwards.
Where Rogers would fit in at United
So how would he actually fit into a Manchester United XI?
Rogers has built his reputation operating across the front line, comfortable drifting in from the left, linking play as a second striker or dropping into pockets as an advanced playmaker. At United, that flexibility would be gold.
He could slot in off the left, driving inside to combine with a central striker, or operate as a roaming No. 10 in a fluid front three. His eye for a final pass and his willingness to work without the ball would give United another creative outlet behind their centre-forward, while easing the burden on their existing wide players.
The attraction for United is obvious: a young, homegrown attacker already producing elite numbers in the Premier League, capable of lifting the technical level of their attack and fitting into multiple systems.
The dilemma is just as clear. To land him, they may have to break through a financial ceiling that even they have rarely tested since the Grealish benchmark was set.
If United decide Morgan Rogers is the man to front their next era, this summer could turn into one of the defining transfer battles of the window.
