Manchester United Target Felix Nmecha as Casemiro Replacement

Manchester United are circling a familiar name in their search for a long-term Casemiro replacement – and he learned his trade just across town.

Felix Nmecha, now starring for Germany at the World Cup and anchoring Borussia Dortmund’s midfield, has emerged as a serious option for United, according to reports in Germany. The 25-year-old has been on their radar since at least February, but his performances on the international stage have sharpened the focus.

His latest reminder came in brutal fashion. Nmecha opened the scoring in Germany’s 7-1 demolition of Curacao, stepping onto a loose ball 20 yards out and whipping a first-time, right-footed strike into the top corner. One touch, no backlift, no doubt.

The goal was the highlight, but not the whole story. Nmecha drove from box to box, broke up counters, and stitched play together – the kind of all-court midfield display United have lacked since Casemiro’s influence began to fade.

From City’s academy to Dortmund engine room

Nmecha’s journey gives this pursuit an added edge. He came through Manchester City’s academy, highly rated but unable to crack a star-studded first team. A standout loan spell at Anderlecht in Belgium in 2020-21 put him on the map, and Wolfsburg moved quickly to sign him in 2021.

His rise continued in the Bundesliga, earning him a switch to Dortmund, where his development has accelerated again. Now, with the World Cup spotlight on him, the club’s faith looks shrewd – and potentially very expensive for any buyer.

Reports from Sky Sports Deutschland claim United are one of several clubs pushing for his signature. The twist? City, his former side and United’s neighbours, are also credited with an interest.

If that tug-of-war develops, it would be a rare case of the Manchester rivals battling over a player who grew up in sky blue but could yet become a pillar in red.

They are not alone. Real Madrid are also believed to be monitoring Nmecha, with returning manager Jose Mourinho understood to be an admirer. A three-way contest between United, City and Madrid for a midfielder in his prime would say everything about how far his stock has risen.

Dortmund hold the cards – for now

Any chase comes with a harsh reality: Dortmund are in a position of strength.

The German club have Nmecha tied down until 2030, a long-term deal that gives them control over his future and timeline. A release clause of around £61m is written into that contract, but it does not become active until the summer of 2027.

Inside the club, there is a clear expectation that if he moves, it will be in that window rather than this summer. Dortmund are under no pressure to sell now, and they know the World Cup stage only pushes the price – and the interest – higher.

Nmecha’s camp is striking the same tone. His agent, Tobi Alabi, made it clear in an interview with Bild that there is no rush to engineer a move.

“Felix still has two years left on his contract, and we fully respect that. Borussia Dortmund have played an important role in his development,” Alabi said, stressing the player’s gratitude for the trust and platform the club have provided.

He pointed to Nmecha’s steady progression “from season to season” and acknowledged that strong performances naturally bring questions about his future. But the message was firm: the focus, for now, remains on Dortmund and helping the team hit its targets.

In other words, the suitors can watch, they can plan, they can talk – but prising him away in the short term will be another matter entirely.

United’s midfield rebuild gathers pace

United’s interest in Nmecha sits within a broader midfield overhaul. Casemiro, once the side’s defensive anchor, is edging towards the exit, and the club has already moved decisively for one replacement.

They are on the brink of confirming the £39m signing of Brazil international Ederson from Atalanta, with the midfielder expected to undergo his medical while on World Cup duty. That deal would add energy, aggression and ball-winning ability to the core of the team.

Nmecha, though, represents something slightly different: a taller, rangier presence who can screen the back line, carry the ball through the thirds and threaten from distance. A modern No. 8 with a defensive conscience – and a profile that fits the Premier League.

United’s recruitment team know they cannot afford another misstep in the middle of the pitch. They also know players who can both protect and progress the ball at elite level are in short supply.

So the chase begins. A former City prospect, now a Dortmund mainstay, potentially returning to Manchester in red, not blue.

If United decide Nmecha is the man to replace Casemiro, how far – and how fast – are they willing to go to beat City and Madrid to him?
