Calvin Ramsay Aims to Rebuild at St Mirren After Loan from Liverpool
Calvin Ramsay says he wants to “rebuild myself” at St Mirren after sealing a season-long loan move from Liverpool – and he knows exactly what’s at stake.
The 23-year-old arrives in Paisley still carrying the weight of a £4.1m transfer fee from Aberdeen to Anfield four years ago, but with only four first-team appearances for Liverpool to show for it. His career since has been a patchwork of loan spells – Preston, Bolton, Wigan, Kilmarnock – 26 games in total, flashes of promise without the sustained run he craves.
Now he is back in Scotland with a point to prove.
“I know the league and I wanted to come back up here and try and show what I can do and rebuild myself again,” Ramsay said, laying out his intentions in simple terms rather than grand promises.
“I feel like it's a good place to come. I want to try and perform, work as hard as I can and see where that takes me.”
This isn’t a nostalgia trip. Ramsay talks like a player who understands the urgency of his situation. One Scotland cap, earned in 2022, sits on his record. For a player once talked about as a long-term answer at right-back, that number feels unfinished.
He believes St Mirren’s evolution under Craig McLeish can help him find his rhythm.
“It's probably a different St Mirren compared to the last few years. That'll suit me,” he said. “I'm comfortable on the ball, I'm composed, I like to get on it and try and create things and make things happen.”
McLeish is just as clear about why the deal works for both sides. He sees a full-back who can change the feel of his team.
The manager described Ramsay as “exceptional” and said the defender will bring a “different dynamic” to the squad – a line-breaking, front-foot option on the right.
“It's a really important year for Calvin where he needs to find regular football to help kick on his career and we're happy to give him that platform because we get an exceptional young player to add to our group,” McLeish said.
St Mirren get a Scotland international desperate for minutes. Ramsay gets a stage, familiar surroundings and a manager willing to back him.
Now he has to turn the chance into a restart, not another footnote.
