Marc Bernal, the Barcelona teenager who has been on United’s radar for months, is staying put at Camp Nou. Not on loan. Not with an option. Not at all.
United’s midfield plan hits a wall
United have already spent big to reshape the centre of the pitch. Andrey Santos has arrived from Chelsea in a £50million deal, a statement signing for a department that has looked short of legs and imagination. Youri Tielemans followed from Aston Villa after United triggered the £35m release clause in his contract, adding proven Premier League craft and experience.
Even with those two through the door, Old Trafford insiders have continued to explore one more midfield addition before the window shuts on September 1. Bernal’s name has consistently surfaced in those conversations, a 19-year-old viewed as a long-term anchor who could grow with a new-look United side.
That idea can now be filed away.
Barcelona and Bernal close ranks
Reports in Spain, notably from Mundo Deportivo, are blunt: Bernal has decided to stay at Barcelona this summer, and the club never entertained the prospect of him leaving.
The midfielder is described as having “absolute loyalty” to the La Liga champions. For Barcelona, that loyalty is backed by paperwork. Bernal’s contract includes a €500m (£427.5m) release clause, a figure designed less as a price and more as a deterrent. Unless Barcelona themselves soften their stance – and there is no suggestion they will – the clause renders any move virtually impossible.
United are not the only ones turned away. Chelsea and Arsenal have also been credited with serious interest, as have Roma and Saudi Pro League side Al Nassr. All find themselves in the same position: admiring from distance while Barcelona build around a player they clearly see as central to their future.
A breakthrough season in Catalonia
Barcelona’s refusal to negotiate is grounded in Bernal’s rapid rise. Last season, the club handed him a significantly larger role. He made 22 La Liga appearances as Barça wrestled the title back from Real Madrid, a campaign that underlined both his composure and his ceiling.
He also stepped onto the Champions League stage, featuring six times and scoring once – a strike against Newcastle United in the last 16 that underlined his growing sense of belonging at the elite level.
For a 19-year-old, those numbers are not padding. They are a signal. Barcelona see a homegrown midfielder maturing in real time, and they are acting like a club determined not to repeat past mistakes in the transfer market.
United’s next move
For United, the message is clear: any pursuit of Bernal is a non-starter this summer. Their recruitment team, led by the club’s football department and working in tandem with Michael Carrick, must look elsewhere as pre-season preparations continue.
The need for another midfielder has not vanished. The profile they were chasing in Bernal – young, technically secure, able to play at the highest level – will likely shape the shortlist in the coming weeks. But the Spanish route, at least in this case, is blocked.
United have until September 1 to complete their business. Santos and Tielemans are already bedding in. Carrick is on the training pitch, testing combinations, weighing what he still lacks.
The market is moving. The question now is whether United can find their next midfield pillar somewhere other than Camp Nou – and how costly it will be, in both time and money, if they get that call wrong.
