Manchester United Likely to Keep Marcus Rashford for 2026/27 Season
Manchester United appear to have made their call on Marcus Rashford. After a summer of doubt, briefings and offers from far-flung leagues, the club now look increasingly likely to keep the forward for the 2026/27 season.
The noise around Rashford has been relentless. His future has hung over United’s window, a key financial and tactical domino that needed to fall before they could move for a new left winger. The expectation in many quarters was simple: sell him, clear the wages, start again.
But inside the club, the mood has shifted.
Carrick wants him, the board wavers
United’s hierarchy have been open to a sale. With his salary among the highest at Old Trafford, moving Rashford on was viewed as a straightforward way to ease the wage bill and create room for reinforcements out wide. Interest arrived from the Premier League, across Europe and from Saudi Arabia, with MLS also monitoring the situation.
Yet Michael Carrick and his staff see something different. The new head coach is understood to be relishing the chance to work with Rashford and believes he can still become a central figure for his boyhood club next season. That belief has complicated what once looked like a clean financial decision.
The board have not completely closed the door on an exit. Saudi Pro League clubs remain keen, and another loan to Barcelona has been floated. But time is running out, and so are realistic alternatives.
As BBC Sport’s Simon Stone put it, an “unlikely reunion” between Rashford and United is now “close to completion”, with the club’s “future” expected to “include him” unless there is an “unexpected late twist”.
Romano: ‘More than a 50% chance’ he stays
Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano has underlined that change in mood. Speaking on his latest YouTube update, Romano said “the feeling internally at United is that he has increasing chances to continue at the club”.
He went further, suggesting Rashford could feel “like a new signing” for United this season, and put the probability of him staying at “more than a 50% chance” heading into the 2026/27 campaign.
That is a significant marker in a saga that, earlier in the summer, seemed to be heading in the opposite direction.
No appetite for Saudi or Turkey
If United were tempted to cash in via one of the emerging markets, Rashford himself is not playing along. Romano reiterated that the forward currently has no intention of moving to the Saudi Pro League or the Turkish Super Lig. His stance is clear: he will only consider moves within “top European leagues”.
That view is shared by Jeff Stelling, who did not mince his words on talkSPORT.
“From Marcus Rashford’s point of view, he won’t want to go to Turkey,” Stelling said. “He’s been at Barcelona. Forgive me, talkSPORT fans, for someone like Rashford, it would be a last resort, in my view. I just don’t see it happening.”
The Barcelona spell, where Rashford produced 14 goals and 14 assists in all competitions during his loan, raised expectations that the Catalan club might trigger a permanent deal. They chose not to take up the £26m option and instead moved for Anthony Gordon, closing off what had looked like the most natural escape route.
That decision has left Rashford in a kind of limbo: too valuable for United to discard lightly, too expensive for many suitors, and too ambitious to chase a pay day in a league he does not consider elite.
A ‘new signing’ or a missed opportunity?
So United edge towards a future that once seemed unlikely: Rashford, back at Old Trafford, being asked to rediscover the form that made him one of Europe’s most dangerous forwards.
For Carrick, that is an opportunity. For the board, it may feel like a compromise. For Rashford, it is a crossroads.
If he stays, he will do so with expectations reset. After the club weighed up selling him to reshape the squad, anything less than a leading role will feel like a waste of a high-stakes decision.
United have gambled on him before. They may be about to do it again.
