Manchester United Eye Teen Defender Jorge Salinas from Racing Santander
Manchester United have already torn up and rebuilt much of Michael Carrick’s squad this summer. Six new signings in the door, a clear shift in profile and age, and still the recruitment department refuses to slow down.
The next move could come from Spain – and from a teenager who has quietly become one of La Liga’s most coveted young defenders.
United prepared to pay the clause
According to Spanish outlet SPORT, United are willing to trigger the €16m (£14m) release clause of Jorge Salinas, the 19-year-old centre-back who has emerged from Real Racing Club de Santander’s academy and into their first team since his debut in 2024.
Barcelona have tracked him too. They like the player, they like the potential, but they do not like the price. SPORT report that Barca have no intention of paying the clause, opening the door for United to move into pole position.
For a club already deep into a summer rebuild, it would be a significant statement: paying the full clause, no haggling, for a teenager who is yet to leave his first professional club.
Atletico circling, but waiting on Ruggeri
United are not alone in the chase. Atletico Madrid are also in the picture, though their timing is complicated.
Reports relayed by Sport Witness claim Atleti are waiting for Matteo Ruggeri to complete his move to Aston Villa before stepping up for Salinas. Villa are said to have agreed a deal worth €18m plus €6m in bonuses – around £20m – with Los Rojiblancos for Ruggeri.
Only once that sale is completed are Atletico expected to make their move. Until then, the door remains ajar for United to act first and cleanly by going straight to the release clause.
Racing dig in – but know the rules
Inside Racing Santander, there is no appetite to lose Salinas. Or Gustavo Puerta, for that matter.
Racing boss Jorge Salinas – no relation to the defender – pushed back strongly this week against the constant speculation surrounding his two young stars.
“Their professionalism doesn't surprise me. What surprises me is that people are constantly talking about the departure of two of our players [Salinas and Puerta], when they have contracts and are our players,” he said.
He made his stance crystal clear.
“They're very important to us. I don't want them to leave. And they show every day that they don't either.
“But we know how this world works and there are release clauses. If a team comes along and pays the clause, they cease to be our players."
That is the tension at the heart of this story. Racing want to build. Europe’s elite want to buy. The contract sits in the middle, with a number printed on it that everyone now knows.

Racing sporting director Chema Aragon struck a similar tone last week. Determined, but realistic.
"There's little you can do if a giant appears," Aragon admitted. "We value the assets we have, we consider them important.
“For the club, at this time, there is no other option than to try to strengthen the team and not weaken it by losing stars. The reality is that the club that wants him has to come along with an offer."
That line will not be lost on United or Barcelona. Nor on Atletico, waiting in the wings.
The message from Santander is simple: they will not push Salinas out of the door, they will not hold an auction in public, but they will not be able to resist if a heavyweight turns admiration into a formal bid.
United now know the price, the competition and the stance of the selling club. The only question left is whether Old Trafford is ready to turn interest into a decisive move for one of Spain’s most highly regarded young defenders.
