Manchester United Names 15-Year-Old JJ Gabriel in Squad for Atletico Madrid Match
Manchester United’s pre-season steps into sharper focus on Saturday – and a 15-year-old is heading straight into the deep end.
JJ Gabriel has been named in Michael Carrick’s 23-man squad to face Atletico Madrid in Stockholm, the teenager travelling again with the first team as he chases a debut at Strawberry Arena against Diego Simeone’s side. For a player who should still be worrying about academy fixtures, this is a very different kind of education.
The squad is leaner than the groups that went to Helsinki to meet Wrexham and to Trondheim for last week’s 5-0 dismantling of Rosenborg. Carrick has trimmed the numbers, the opposition level has risen, and the margins for a run-out have narrowed.

Gabriel’s inclusion stands out again. He travelled to Norway for the Rosenborg rout but, like midfielder Jim Thwaites, never left the bench. Thwaites has now been an unused substitute in both games so far, a reminder of how fierce the competition is even in July and August. The pair will hope the step up in opponent does not close the door on minutes, but instead forces Carrick to look deeper into his bench.
To make room, others fall away. Toby Collyer, Dan Gore, Jacob Devaney and Chido Obi all drop out of the travelling party this time, victims of the natural tightening that comes when the opposition wears the badge of Atletico Madrid rather than a Scandinavian pre-season regular.
The defensive group carries a blend of seniority and promise. Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw anchor a back line that also features Yoro, Dorgu, Amass, Armer, Heaven and Kamason. Between the posts, Bayindir joins Tom Heaton, with Mee and Vitek completing a four-strong goalkeeping unit.
Midfield has a familiar focal point in Mason Mount, supported by Santos, Thwaites and the Fletcher brothers, J. Fletcher and T. Fletcher, both continuing their own push to convince the staff they belong around the senior group.
This is still pre-season, still about patterns and fitness and rhythm. Yet the presence of Simeone’s Atletico changes the feel. Mistakes get punished, intensity spikes, and young players like Gabriel discover very quickly whether they can live at this pace.
For United, the squad list is more than a roll call; it is a snapshot of a club trying to balance tomorrow’s talent with today’s demands, one high-profile friendly at a time.
