Manchester United are reshaping their goalkeeping department with a ruthless clarity, cashing in on Radek Vítek and sending Altay Bayindir to Spain as the club leans fully into a new hierarchy between the posts.
Vítek cashes in on breakthrough year
Vítek, fresh from a standout season on loan at Bristol City, is on the brink of a permanent move to Middlesbrough in a deal that could rise to £14 million with bonuses. For a 22-year-old who arrived from Sigma Olomouc in 2020 as a long-term project, it is a sharp jump into the mainstream.
His path has been anything but glamorous. Spells at Accrington and Austrian side Blau-Weiss Linz offered minutes rather than headlines, but it was at Ashton Gate where he finally imposed himself, convincing Championship clubs that he was ready to be a number one rather than a prospect.
Middlesbrough, still nursing the frustration of last season’s playoff final defeat, see him as a cornerstone signing. Michael Carrick’s side are rebuilding with intent, and Vítek fits the profile: young, proven at Championship level, and hungry.
United have not walked away lightly. The deal includes matching rights and a buy-back clause, a clear sign they are wary of watching another young goalkeeper blossom elsewhere with no way back. There is also a sell-on clause of up to 35 per cent, a sizeable insurance policy if Vítek’s value explodes on Teesside.
Carrick’s new goalkeeping order
This move drops into a wider reshuffle at Middlesbrough. Senne Lammens has the number one shirt, and Karl Darlow has arrived on a free to add experience to a revamped unit. The Welsh international’s signing followed Andre Onana’s return to Trabzonspor on loan, and now Vítek’s arrival completes a bold reset in goal.
Carrick wants reliability and competition. Lammens offers the former, Darlow the latter, and Vítek brings upside. If he adapts quickly, the pressure on the established order will be immediate.
Bayindir heads for a reset in LaLiga
While Vítek steps into the Championship spotlight, Bayindir is heading for a different kind of audition. The Turkey international is close to joining Celta Vigo on a season-long loan, a move that finally offers him a platform after spending most of his time at Old Trafford in the shadows.
Since arriving from Fenerbahce in 2023, the 28-year-old has largely watched from the bench. Now Celta are ready to hand him the gloves and, potentially, much more. The Spanish club will cover his wages and pay performance-related bonuses, underlining that this is not a token back-up signing.
The deal carries an option to buy, reportedly set at £3.5 million, with a sell-on clause in United’s favour if Celta trigger the permanent move. For United, it is a low-risk exit route that could turn into a clean break next summer. For Bayindir, it is a chance to prove he should never have been a footnote.
United’s goalkeeping picture looks very different now: Senne Lammens installed, Karl Darlow in support, and two former hopefuls sent out to define their own careers. The question is no longer whether they had too many goalkeepers on the books.
It is which of the ones they’ve let go will come back to haunt them.
