Vitek closes in on Middlesbrough move

Radek Vitek, long tipped as one of the more promising stoppers in United’s system, is on the verge of leaving Old Trafford for good. Middlesbrough are finalising a permanent deal for the 20-year-old, according to talkSPORT and reporter Ben Jacobs.

Jacobs wrote on X that Middlesbrough are “close to signing” the Czech goalkeeper, who spent last season on loan at Bristol City and is pushing for regular first-team football. talkSPORT echoed that stance, describing Boro as “closing in” on the transfer.

The fee remains under wraps for now, but a previous report from the Daily Mail suggested United would look for around £10m to cash in on Vitek this summer. For a player who has yet to make a competitive senior appearance for the club, that would represent tidy business – and a clear sign of United’s intent to monetise their academy depth.

Vitek’s name was always likely to surface this month. The Athletic had already listed him among six players who could depart before the window shuts, alongside fellow goalkeeper Altay Bayindir, full-back Harry Amass, midfielder Toby Collyer, and forwards Joshua Zirkzee and Ethan Wheatley.

Now the first domino is about to fall.

Bayindir to Celta Vigo: ‘here we go’

If Vitek’s move is about long-term opportunity, Altay Bayindir’s is about a reset.

Fabrizio Romano confirmed on Wednesday morning that Celta Vigo have struck an agreement with Manchester United to sign Bayindir on loan. His trademark “here we go” came attached to a deal that includes a €4m buy option, with the final fee set to fluctuate based on appearances.

Bayindir has been authorised to travel for his medical and to sign the contract with the Spanish club. For a player who arrived with promise but never truly threatened the No. 1 spot at Old Trafford, La Liga offers a stage and, crucially, minutes.

United, meanwhile, are quietly reshaping their goalkeeping department.

With Vitek heading for Middlesbrough and Bayindir bound for Celta Vigo, the picture for next season is far clearer.

United’s planned goalkeeping hierarchy is set: Senne Lammens as the starter, new signing Karl Darlow as the back-up, and veteran Tom Heaton in reserve. It’s a structure built on experience around a younger first choice, and it underpins a broader strategy this window.

While the spotlight has sat on the search for one more midfielder and a new left-back, the club have been just as ruthless in trimming around the edges. Moves for a left-winger or a striker are understood to hinge on major exits, with Marcus Rashford and Joshua Zirkzee the names that would trigger that level of reinvestment.
