Manchester United Goalkeeper Reshuffle: Bayindir Leaves for Celta Vigo
Manchester United’s late-summer clear-out between the posts is underway, and the first domino has fallen. Altay Bayindir is heading for La Liga, with Celta Vigo striking a deal that underlines just how ruthlessly Old Trafford is trimming its goalkeeping department.
Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano confirmed the agreement, stating that Celta have reached a deal with United to take Bayindir on loan. The move includes a €4m buy option, a fee that can shift depending on how often the Turkey international features in Spain. United have authorised the 26-year-old to travel for his medical and to finalise the paperwork.
It is a sharp turn in fortunes for a player who arrived with promise but never truly threatened the hierarchy. Bayindir found himself stuck behind Andre Onana and Tom Heaton last season, and his path narrowed even further when United moved quickly in the free-agent market this summer.
Karl Darlow’s arrival was a clear signal. The experienced Wales international has been brought in to sit directly behind Senne Lammens, with the club mapping out a defined pecking order. Heaton, content and established as the No 3, remains the steady veteran presence. That left Bayindir as the expendable piece in an increasingly crowded room.
The pressure finally told. With minutes unlikely and his development at risk of stalling, United granted Bayindir permission to go and Celta stepped in, offering a stage and a potential long-term escape route if the loan turns permanent.
He is not the only goalkeeper on the move. Radek Vitek, another name on United’s list of possible exits, has also been given the green light to leave. Overnight, talks accelerated with Middlesbrough, and United are now closing in on a permanent deal for the 22-year-old.
These decisions are part of a wider, sharper strategy at Old Trafford as the final month of the window opens up. A third midfielder is on the agenda. A new left-back too, though Lewis Hall is off the table after Newcastle, having already cashed in on Sandro Tonali, Anthony Gordon and now Bruno Guimaraes to Arsenal, dug in and refused to entertain a sale.
United, for their part, are cutting around the edges of the squad to create room and flexibility. The Athletic recently highlighted six players who could be moved on: Bayindir, Vitek, Harry Amass, Toby Collyer, Ethan Wheatley and Joshua Zirkzee. Two of those exits are now either agreed or close, and the goalkeeping department is being reshaped with unusual clarity.
The message is blunt. There will be no passengers in this new structure. If Bayindir and Vitek make the most of their fresh starts in Spain and the Championship, the decisions will look even sharper by the time this window slams shut.
