Manchester United Targets Ederson for Midfield Rebuild
Manchester United’s summer is starting not with a galáctico, but with a grafter.
Club officials are working on a deal to bring Ederson from Atalanta, with talks described as progressing as United move to make the Brazilian their first signing of the transfer window, according to the Manchester Evening News.
It is a move that speaks loudly about what Jason Wilcox wants this team to become.
The engine before the headline act
Ederson is not the sort of name that sends social media into meltdown. He is 26, has 12 months left on his Atalanta contract and has built his reputation in Serie A on hard running, aggression and stamina rather than YouTube-friendly highlights.
But that, right now, is exactly the point.
United’s recruitment team have tracked him since last year and see him as a versatile option who can operate as a deep-lying midfielder or as a No. 8. In Italy, he has been noted for his “running power” and physical edge – qualities United’s midfield has often lacked when games turn into sprints and duels.
The club’s interest is described as definite, with confidence that Ederson could become the first arrival of the window if negotiations with Atalanta keep moving in the same direction.
The signing would also carry another layer of symbolism: he is expected to be Michael Carrick’s first addition, a nod to the former midfielder’s influence on the rebuild of United’s core.
A rebuild, not a quick fix
Ederson, though, is only one part of a much larger plan.
United want at least two midfielders this summer. They are treating the Brazilian as a key squad and system piece, not as the marquee name to replace Casemiro at the heart of the side.
Internally, senior figures have “earmarked significant investment” for that role. The club know they cannot cut corners on the player who will anchor the next phase of the team, and Ederson’s potential arrival is not expected to change that strategy.
He is the worker. The headline is still to come.
Eyes on a marquee name
At the top of United’s midfield shortlist sits Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson. The 21-year-old has impressed enough to be viewed as a prime target, but United are determined not to get dragged into a bidding war with Manchester City.
They want value as well as talent, not another auction that spirals out of control.
The dream, though, wears white in Spain. Aurélien Tchouaméni is “seen as a dream midfield signing at Old Trafford”, the kind of all-court presence who could define their midfield for a decade. For now, it remains just that – a dream. Real Madrid have shown no sign of entertaining his departure, and United know it.
So the club keep their options wide.
Mateus Fernandes is also on the radar. With West Ham dropping into the Championship, the expectation is that a deal for the Portuguese midfielder would be relatively straightforward to complete. He represents another possible piece in a new-look unit built on energy and mobility.
United’s summer, then, is taking shape. Not with one blockbuster, but with a clear idea: rebuild the midfield’s legs, then crown it with a star. Ederson looks set to be the first test of whether this new plan can actually be delivered.
