Gavin Bazunu Signs with Bolton Wanderers for Career Revival
Gavin Bazunu has drawn a line under his Southampton spell and dropped back into the Championship with Bolton Wanderers, signing a three-year deal that he hopes will relaunch his club and international career.
The Republic of Ireland goalkeeper, still only 24, leaves St Mary’s after two unsettled seasons in which early promise gave way to loans, injuries and a slide down the pecking order. He arrives at Bolton not as a prospect, but as a keeper who needs games – and quickly.
Bazunu made 19 Championship appearances for Southampton last season but lost his starting place as the club reshaped its goalkeeping options following relegation from the Premier League. Once viewed as a long-term No 1 after his move from Manchester City in 2022, he never quite nailed down the shirt.
His trajectory since then has been stop-start. The second half of the 2025-26 campaign took him to Stoke City on loan, a spell hampered by injury and disruption rather than defined by momentum. Before that, Southampton had already sent him abroad to Standard Liège in Belgium’s top flight, another stint that underlined his need for a stable home rather than a carousel of short-term fixes.
Bolton are offering exactly that: a permanent move, a clear role, and the promise of minutes. The fee is undisclosed, but the intent is obvious.
"It's obviously a club with massive history. I see it as a place where I can come and progress my personal career, while helping the team with their ambitions of getting back to where they belong," Bazunu told Wanderers TV, making no secret of the mutual ambition at play.
His message was as much to Ireland manager Heimir Hallgrimsson as it was to Bolton supporters.
"I want to get back to being in a position where I’m playing week in, week out and enjoying my football again. My big aim and ambition here is to play as many games as I can and show my levels."
For a goalkeeper with 22 senior caps, the clock is ticking. Bazunu’s last appearance for Ireland came in March 2024 in a friendly against Switzerland, and although he received a call-up as recently as last November, he has not been able to build the kind of club form that makes selection automatic.
That is what this move is about. Rhythm. Repetition. Responsibility.
"I’m excited to be here and excited for what’s to come. I’m sure all the other new signings will have said the same thing, but we’re excited to get going, show our qualities and show where this team belongs," he added.
Bolton, with their own long-term push to climb back up the English pyramid, now place part of that journey in the hands of a goalkeeper still looking to fully prove himself. If Bazunu finds the consistency that eluded him at Southampton, this could be the season that decides whether he remains Ireland’s future – or becomes part of its past.
