Manchester United Confirm Bruno Fernandes Will Not Leave

Manchester United have drawn a thick red line through Bruno Fernandes’ name on the transfer market. The message from Old Trafford is blunt: their captain is going nowhere.

With the deadline looming next month, Galatasaray, Juventus and AC Milan have all weighed up moves for the Portugal international, sounding out the possibility of prising him away. Galatasaray, in particular, were understood to be readying a proposal that could have climbed to 50m euros (£42.7m).

They have been warned off. Senior United figures are adamant any approach would be a waste of time.

This is a very different stance from last summer. Back then, United left the decision largely in Fernandes’ hands when Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal arrived with a huge offer. The midfielder later admitted he felt “hurt” by the club’s willingness to let him choose whether to go.

Not this time. Club sources insist there have been no formal bids for the 31-year-old, but stress he is not for sale at any price. The line is hard, and it is deliberate.

Fernandes’ contract adds another layer to the story. He has one year left on his current deal, with an option for a further season. The £57m release clause that once gave suitors a clear route to sign him has now expired. There is, as yet, no agreement over an extension, but it is understood Fernandes would rather stay than push for a move.

United know they hold a strong hand. They control the contract, the clause has vanished, and they have a player who wants to remain at the club he captains.

They also know the mood of the fanbase. In Dublin last week, during a pre-season meeting with Leeds, Fernandes walked into a wall of noise. The welcome was loud, affectionate and unmistakable. For the hierarchy, it was a live reminder: any hint that United are not doing everything to keep their talisman would go down badly.

On the pitch, his influence is impossible to ignore. Fernandes delivered a Premier League record 21 assists last season, a staggering creative output that underpinned United’s attacking play. Next week in Manchester, he is the favourite to be named PFA Player of the Year for 2025-26, a personal accolade that would only sharpen the sense that he is central to what the club want to build.

Rivals may test the waters again before the window shuts. For now, the answer from Old Trafford is clear. The captain stays.
