Manchester United Targets Alex Scott for £80m Midfield Rebuild
Manchester United’s midfield rebuild has a new leading man.
Alex Scott, the gifted Bournemouth playmaker, has moved to the top of United’s shortlist as the club wrestles with a summer window that has already seen key targets slip away.
United have explored a number of midfield options and held talks over a move for Scott, who has rapidly grown into one of the Premier League’s standout young midfielders since joining the Cherries. His form on the south coast has not gone unnoticed, drawing interest from several clubs, but it is United who are now circling most intently.
The club’s priority is clear: at least one midfielder must arrive before the window closes. Scott is no longer just one of many names. According to journalist Samuel Luckhurst, he is now the preferred target in that area of the pitch.
Price Concern
The problem is the price.
Bournemouth value the 20-year-old at around £80 million, a figure that reflects both his potential and his importance to Andoni Iraola’s side. United have not yet walked away from the chase, though. Luckhurst reports that the Old Trafford hierarchy have not ruled out making a bid, even at that level, and remain firmly in the race for his signature.
Bournemouth, for their part, are not sitting still. The club are working to tie Scott down to a new contract, and any fresh deal is expected to include a release clause. That would give the Cherries some control over his future while acknowledging the scale of interest building around him.
United arrive at this point after missing out on both Elliot Anderson and Mateus Fernandes, deals that slipped through as Tottenham and Manchester City were prepared to pay fees the Old Trafford board were unwilling to match. Those setbacks have sharpened the sense that United must choose their moment to commit, and choose it soon.
Summer Strategy
The strategy this summer is clear enough: be smarter, not just richer. United are trying to avoid the trap of overpaying for every target, even as the market for young, Premier League-proven midfielders continues to inflate. Caution has its limits, though. At some point, a club with United’s ambitions has to take the hit on a player they truly believe in.
That is the question now hanging over Scott. Is he the one they finally push the button on?
United’s need in midfield is not going away. The squad requires fresh energy, control and creativity in the centre of the pitch, and the coming weeks will decide whether Scott is the player trusted to deliver it – or whether he becomes just another name on the growing list of opportunities that got away.
