Manchester City Targets Enzo Fernandez Amid Rodri Exit
Manchester City’s summer, already expensive and emotionally charged, is edging towards a defining moment: life with or without Rodri. And if the Spaniard really does walk away, the next domino could be Enzo Fernandez.
That is the view of former City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who believes Chelsea’s Argentine midfielder remains firmly on the radar at the Etihad as the club prepares for the possibility of losing its No.16.
Rodri countdown sets transfer tone
Rodri’s situation hangs over everything. City know they cannot drift into the new season without clarity. According to Borson, the club want any departure resolved before the Community Shield against Arsenal on Sunday, 16 August. After that, the shutters may come down.
The stance is simple: bring the right offer by then, or he stays. No drawn-out saga, no deadline-day drama. City want control.
Behind that hard line, though, lies a reality. If Rodri goes, they have to replace him. Properly.
“They do want to replace him if he goes, and that's above and beyond the [Ayyoub] Bouaddi deal, which I think will still happen regardless,” Borson told Football Insider. City are already reshaping the squad under Enzo Maresca, but a Rodri-sized hole would demand something more than a talented teenager.
Big spending, bigger decisions
The champions have already thrown serious money at this window. Elliot Anderson has arrived from Nottingham Forest for £116 million, a statement fee for a player they believe can grow into a major figure. Lille’s 18-year-old Ayyoub Bouaddi is expected to follow for around £86m, another heavy investment in the future.
But Maresca is not just building for tomorrow. He is trying to put his stamp on a team that has just lost Pep Guardiola and may now lose its midfield metronome.
That is where Enzo Fernandez enters the frame.
City’s interest in the Chelsea midfielder is no secret, and his previous connection with Maresca only tightens the link. Real Madrid are also circling, but the Etihad remains a very live option if Rodri moves on.
“There's still a question mark over whether Enzo Fernandez goes, which would be an enormous transaction. Is he the [Rodri] replacement to City?” Borson asked. The question is no longer hypothetical. It sits right at the heart of City’s planning.
Chelsea’s own Enzo dilemma
Chelsea, for their part, are braced for a turbulent finish to the window. Borson expects them to be “busy between now and the window closing”, and Fernandez is central to that uncertainty.
The London club are understood to want around £120m to even consider parting with their No.8. It would be one of the standout deals of the summer, financially and symbolically.
Fernandez’s Chelsea career has been a storm of expectation and scrutiny since his World Cup triumph. According to the report, he could now be ready to “throw the towel in” at Stamford Bridge after that high point in Qatar, a striking shift for a player once billed as the cornerstone of Chelsea’s rebuild.
Yet his output last season underlines why elite clubs keep circling. Across 61 games in all competitions, he produced 16 goals and 10 assists. For a midfielder operating in a team still trying to find its identity, those numbers carry weight.
No wonder City see him as a potential solution if Rodri walks away.
City waiting on the Rodri domino
For now, everything is chained to one decision. Rodri goes, and City accelerate. Rodri stays, and Fernandez may remain a question for another year.
“So there's still loads to happen,” Borson said. “But it's a question of whether City are prepared to play that game with Rodri. Or whether they just go, ‘Look, if you haven't brought the offer by the Charity Shield, we're not selling this summer.’”
Maresca and the City hierarchy are ready to be “pretty busy between now and the close of the window.” Buy, sell, reshape. But the biggest call is also the simplest: do they tear out the heart of their midfield and start again?
If they do, Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez might just be the man they gamble on to keep the machine running.
