Manchester United Eye Antonio Conte as Potential Successor to Michael Carrick
Manchester United are reportedly considering a managerial change after a troubling start to the 2026-27 Premier League season. The club is said to have opened talks with Antonio Conte, the former Chelsea and Tottenham manager, as a possible replacement for Michael Carrick.
Unsteady Start Spurs United to Search for New Leadership
The Red Devils hoped for progress this season following Carrick's permanent appointment and new signings over the summer. Instead, losses against Hull City, Manchester City, and Brighton have raised concerns about the team's direction.
Conte Favored to Take Over at Old Trafford
Calciomercato reports that Conte, 57, stands as the leading candidate to assume control if United decide to part ways with Carrick. Initial contact has been made to check Conte’s availability. Currently without a club after leaving Napoli last season, Conte was rumored to return to the Italy national team, but with Roberto Mancini holding that role, a return to the Premier League seems likely.
Domestic Troubles Mount for Carrick
Though United secured convincing home wins over Ipswich Town and Sabah in the Champions League, their overall performance remains worrying. The recent defeat to Brighton ended a 50-year streak where United never lost at home after leading by two goals, increasing pressure on Carrick.
Carrick faces a vital international break period to regroup and replicate the promising form seen late last season.
Key Fixtures Loom After International Break
After the break, United confront two pivotal matches within three days. First is a home game against bottom-placed Tottenham Hotspur, whose manager Roberto De Zerbi also faces scrutiny. Failing to win could further jeopardize Carrick’s position.
Shortly after, United travel to Spain to face Atletico Madrid in the Champions League. If results do not improve drastically across these games, Conte may be stepping into the Old Trafford dugout sooner than expected.
