Liverpool's Failed Pursuit of Yan Diomande: €100m Bid Rejected
Liverpool’s pursuit of Yan Diomande is heading for the same graveyard as Mohamed Salah’s contract.
They have thrown money, time and late-night calls at the 19-year-old RB Leipzig winger. They have made him the centrepiece of a summer rebuild on the right flank. And they are still losing him.
Liverpool’s €100m swing misses
Liverpool moved early. Once Salah’s deal was torn up and the club accepted the end of an era, Diomande was pushed to the top of the list. Young, explosive, comfortable attacking from the right – the profile made sense, the fee less so.
An offer worth €100m, around £85m, went in to Leipzig. The structure is disputed – either €90m plus €10m in add-ons or €80m plus €20m – but the headline figure is not. Leipzig saw nine digits and still said no.
The rejection stung, but the real blow came when Diomande made his preference clear. He wanted PSG. From that point, Liverpool were running uphill in the dark.
PSG move in, and move hard
For a brief moment, there was a sliver of doubt. Reports surfaced suggesting PSG might cool their interest, that the European champions might look elsewhere and leave the door ajar for the Premier League giants circling.
That window has slammed shut.
Graeme Bailey reports that Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester City all made late plays, sensing even the faintest hesitation from Paris. Of that trio, Liverpool were the most aggressive, already on record with a huge bid and desperate to fill the Salah void.
It has not shifted the player’s stance. Diomande still wants PSG.
Crucially, PSG have responded in the way only a superclub with a clear target can: by sending in Nasser Al-Khelaifi.
The club president has taken personal control of negotiations with Leipzig, leaning on a strong relationship with Red Bull’s hierarchy. Once Al-Khelaifi steps in, talks tend to move. This one has.
Leipzig are now described as “increasingly resigned” to losing their star winger. Internally, the Bundesliga side have accepted that Diomande is closing in on a move to Paris. The expectation is that PSG will pay around €110m, approximately £93.5m, to finish the job.
The pressure told. The deal is not done, but the direction of travel is obvious.
Liverpool’s Plan B: Barcola back in play
So where does that leave Liverpool? Back where they were when Diomande first leaned towards PSG: staring hard at Bradley Barcola.
FSG had already ramped up their interest in the France international once it became clear Diomande’s heart was set on Paris. Barcola is the obvious knock-on effect of PSG’s spending. If Diomande walks through the door at the Parc des Princes for €110m, someone has to feel the squeeze. Barcola is high on that list.
Talks between Barcola and PSG over a new, improved contract have hit an impasse. He is not untouchable. For the right price, he can leave.
Liverpool know that landscape well. They have monitored the situation, stepped up when Diomande drifted away, then pivoted back to the Leipzig winger when a late hijack felt remotely possible. Now, with PSG closing on Diomande and Liverpool’s hopes fading fast, the focus swings firmly back to Barcola again.
It is not the original plan. It might yet prove the smarter one.
Diomande looks destined for Paris, a blockbuster signing for the European champions. Liverpool, staring at a gaping hole on the right and a post-Salah identity to rebuild, must now decide how far they are willing to go – and how much they are willing to spend – on the man PSG may be prepared to sacrifice.
