Liverpool Urged to Re-Sign Trent Alexander-Arnold After Struggles at Real Madrid
Liverpool might be preparing a surprise move to bring back Trent Alexander-Arnold just one year after his big transfer to Real Madrid. The England international has faced challenges settling into life in Spain, leading to speculation that a return to Anfield could be the best option for everyone involved.
Calls for Liverpool to Make a Bold Move
Andy Townsend believes Liverpool should take advantage of the uncertainty surrounding Alexander-Arnold’s role at the Bernabeu. The 27-year-old joined Real Madrid on a free transfer last summer, but his dream move has not gone as planned, stirring talk about a dramatic comeback to his boyhood club.
Townsend explained why this would suit Liverpool's current needs, especially under manager Andoni Iraola. He said on talkSPORT, "If he came back to Liverpool, would he improve them? One hundred per cent, yes. We don’t really have a right back like Jeremie Frimpong. Full backs are critical for attacking play nowadays."
He added, "If you can’t deliver something decent in good areas, that’s a problem. I haven’t seen much final delivery from him so far in Spain, which Trent can do effortlessly. So, he would definitely improve them. The tricky part is how the club and fans would feel about it. Some Liverpool supporters might find it hard to accept."
Jose Mourinho's Tactical Changes Create Challenges
Alexander-Arnold’s position at Real Madrid became more complicated with Jose Mourinho taking charge. The manager prefers a defensively disciplined right-back rather than the creative style Trent offers. Reports indicate Mourinho favors Denzel Dumfries, who fits better into his structured system.
This competition puts Alexander-Arnold’s chances of starting in jeopardy. Townsend observed, "Real Madrid signed Dumfries from Inter, who suits Mourinho’s profile more. They have players like Federico Valverde and other options, so Trent’s path to the first team is blocked. At this stage, he wants to be sure he’ll start regularly."
A Tough First Year in La Liga
Statistics highlight a difficult debut season for Alexander-Arnold in Spain. Injuries and managerial changes limited him to just 14 league starts, stopping him from gaining momentum at the club.
Townsend thinks a loan deal could help. He said, "It must have been disappointing and hurtful that he never really got going. If Liverpool could arrange a loan for a season, even for fees between £5 million and £10 million, they shouldn’t hesitate. He’s a top-quality player."
Training Under Mourinho
Despite rumors about his future, Alexander-Arnold has been working hard in training. Early in the summer, he praised Mourinho’s intensity and standards.
"With Mourinho? Very good, very good. I’ve always admired him. I’ve played against him and it’s a pleasure to work with him and his team. He’s intense, with high principles and expectations.
