Liverpool Targets Raul Asencio and Bradley Barcola for Summer Rebuild
Liverpool’s summer rebuild has taken another twist, and this time the focus is not on the wings but on the heart of defence.
Asencio door opens at Real Madrid
Raul Asencio has been told he can leave Real Madrid. That message from the Bernabeu has alerted Liverpool, who have been quietly sounded out over a potential move for the Spain international centre-back, according to TEAMtalk.
Asencio has been informed there is no long-term role for him under head coach Mourinho, despite the Portuguese making it clear he rates the defender highly. Approval for an exit has been given. The door is open. It is now up to the player to walk through it.
Liverpool, for their part, are not charging in. TEAMtalk report that the club were receptive when Asencio’s representatives made contact and that Andoni Iraola is a long-time admirer of the defender. But there is a key complication: Asencio’s determination to remain at Real Madrid. That stance has kept the situation in a holding pattern, with no formal negotiations taking place.
If the defender eventually accepts that his future lies away from the Santiago Bernabeu, Liverpool are expected to stay firmly in the conversation. For a club whose current centre-back options include Giovanni Leoni and Jeremy Jacquet – both talented, both light on elite-level minutes – the chance to add an experienced operator from Madrid is not one to dismiss lightly.
Attack already under construction
All of this comes against the backdrop of a Liverpool summer largely built around firepower.
Victor Munoz has already arrived from Osasuna. The long-anticipated move for Jeremy Jacquet from Rennes is done. The next big piece is clear: Bradley Barcola.
The Paris Saint-Germain winger has been installed as Liverpool’s primary attacking target, with the club intent on adding at least one more wide forward. His PSG team-mate Ibrahim Mbaye is also on the radar as the recruitment team look to deepen Iraola’s options across the front line.
The strategy is obvious. More pace. More one-v-one threat. More goals.
Barcola talks go official
The pursuit of Barcola has now moved out of the rumour mill and into the boardroom.
Fabrizio Romano confirmed on Monday that Liverpool and PSG have begun “official club-to-club talks” over the France international. Liverpool have formally informed PSG of their intention to bid, and the relationship between the clubs is described as good.
The first signs on the numbers, though, are stark. Romano reports that Liverpool’s initial indications are “far away” from the figure PSG had in mind. This is not close to a “here we go”. Not today. Not tomorrow.
The gap is financial, not sporting. Conversations will continue because Liverpool want Barcola, and Barcola “loves the idea” of joining Liverpool. Personal terms are not expected to be an obstacle; the player is described as “super tempted” by the project at Anfield.
So the deal lives on, somewhere between desire and deadlock, with both clubs now locked into a negotiation that could shape Liverpool’s attack for years.
A squad in transition
Two tracks now define Liverpool’s window.
On one side, a high-profile, high-stakes chase for Barcola, a winger who fits the club’s push for a sharper, more incisive front line.
