Liverpool Targets Rayan as Key Winger in Rebuild
Liverpool have taken a significant early step in their wide-forward rebuild, agreeing personal terms “in principle” with Bournemouth’s Brazilian winger Rayan – on the condition the south-coast club decide to cash in this summer.
The move does not mean a deal is done. It does, however, underline how sharply Liverpool have pivoted towards the 19-year-old as they work the market on a tighter budget and with several of Europe’s elite circling the same targets.
A well-placed source on X (formerly Twitter) has urged supporters to keep a close eye on the situation, with Liverpool also in active pursuit of Bradley Barcola at PSG. The club’s recruitment team, led by Richard Hughes, are clearly running parallel tracks: one eye on Paris, the other on the Vitality Stadium.
A teenager thriving in a brutal league
Rayan’s numbers in his first half-season in the Premier League are not those of a project player quietly learning in the shadows. Seven goal contributions – five goals and two assists – in 15 games from the right flank is the output of someone who has adapted quickly to a division that, last season, turned increasingly hostile for wide men.
As the league leaned harder into physical duels and set-piece chaos, many wingers saw their influence squeezed. Rayan went the other way. He found space, he carried the ball, he produced.
At 19, that matters. Liverpool’s analysts will be looking not just at the raw return, but at how he delivered it in a campaign that asked different questions of attackers out wide. He has answered some of them already.
The market is closing in
The context around this chase is unforgiving. The pool of high-ceiling wide forwards is shrinking by the week.
Yan Diomande, viewed by many as further along in his development after a year in Germany, is expected to join Real Madrid. PSG, meanwhile, are pressing hard for Monaco’s Maghnes Akliouche. As those dominoes fall, Liverpool’s options narrow.
That is where the urgency around Rayan and Barcola comes from. Miss out on both, and the conversation quickly slides down the ladder to names such as Yankuba Minteh and Matias Fernandez-Pardo. With respect to those players, that is a very different level of signing for a club with Liverpool’s ambitions.
One marquee winger, not two
What this will not be is a double swoop. There is no realistic scenario in which Liverpool stretch to both Rayan and Barcola in the same window.
The admiration is genuine, the scouting extensive, but the budget is not what it was. Last summer’s heavy outlay, which delivered record-breaking deals for Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak, will not be repeated. The financial parameters are tighter, and the squad still needs depth across several positions as Andoni Iraola prepares for the 2026/27 season.
Inside the club, Barcola remains at the top of the attacking shortlist. Liverpool have been working on that deal for some time, ready to pounce if negotiations with PSG open up. Rayan, in that sense, looks like the parallel lane – the move that can be accelerated if the French champions dig in or drive the price beyond Anfield’s reach.
The £130m question
Bournemouth’s stance is another key piece. The Cherries have installed a release clause of £130m for Rayan, kicking in this January, according to iPaper. That clause looms over the whole saga.
If Bournemouth decide to hold until the winter, the equation changes completely. If they are willing to sell now, the fee will still be huge, but it will need to sit in the same financial bracket as any Barcola deal – “Barcola money,” as those close to the talks describe it.
Liverpool know they have a narrow window. Move this summer, or risk watching a young winger with elite upside slip into a price range that only a handful of clubs can realistically touch.
Personal terms, at least, are no longer an obstacle. The player is on board in principle. The plan is clear. The question now is whether Liverpool choose Rayan over Barcola, or watch the market move without them.
