Liverpool's Summer Signings: Muñoz Joins as Barcola Saga Continues
Liverpool’s summer is starting to take shape, and it looks exactly as frantic as you’d expect from a club trying to redraw its forward line on the fly.
At Kirkby, a new winger has walked through the door. Across Europe, another is being priced like gold bullion. And over in Turkey, a Liverpool great is wondering how one of Anfield’s modern icons has ended up there at all.
Muñoz arrives believing Iraola is a “perfect fit”
Victor Muñoz didn’t just arrive at Liverpool with a suitcase and a smile. He arrived with a clear idea of how he’s supposed to fit into Andoni Iraola’s vision.
The Spanish winger joined his new team-mates at Kirkby yesterday, handed the No. 23 shirt and, speaking to the club’s website, made it clear he knows exactly why he has been brought in.
“His style, it is well known already that he likes to play with open wingers on both sides and to build this constant and intense pressure, this overwhelming drive forward,” Muñoz said.
That’s not a throwaway line. It’s a job description.
Muñoz sees his own game mirrored in Iraola’s demands: wide, aggressive, relentless.
“So, I think that fits perfectly with my skillset, these are tools that I as a player also bring to the game, so I think it is a good fit for me and I hope to bring these skills to Liverpool.”
Liverpool want to press high, run hard, and attack with width. Muñoz is betting his career that he can be one of the players who makes that system hum.
But while one winger is settling in, the saga around another potential arrival is threatening to define Liverpool’s window.
Barcola chase turns into a test of nerve and finance
Bradley Barcola is quickly becoming the name that won’t go away.
Liverpool have already gone to £100m for the Paris Saint-Germain forward, a figure that would once have sounded outrageous in itself. PSG, though, are standing firm. They want something closer to £145m.
From France, L’Équipe report that the two clubs are still “very far apart” on valuation. Yet there’s a belief the deal will eventually be done, likely once PSG have brought in another winger and a striker of their own.
In other words: everyone knows Liverpool need a marquee wide player. Everyone knows PSG can wait.
The BBC claim Liverpool are preparing to shift their stance and improve their offer, a move that would see Barcola become the third player the club have paid over £100m for, after Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz.
That kind of fee doesn’t just reshape a squad. It reshapes expectations.
Michael Owen, speaking to the ECHO via Casino.org, can see the trap Liverpool are walking into.
“Barcola, he's obviously the big name on everybody's lips. It sounds like he might be available,” the former Liverpool striker said.
“It sounds like he's going to be expensive, though – but they're going to have to make some form of statement signing, of course.”
Then he cut straight to the number that has startled so many.
Speaking about the potential £145m cost, Owen didn’t bother dressing it up.
“That sounds extortionate, doesn't it? For someone that's not proven in the Premier League.
“Obviously played at the highest level, but, yeah, at some point you've got to say no, haven't you? If it gets to £145m, I mean, wow, that's eye-watering…”
The problem, as he sees it, isn’t just the price. It’s the context.
“And the problem is everybody knows you're desperate for a top-class player, so you're going to have to pay through the nose.
“That might be just what you have to do. But it sounds extortionate, doesn't it? £145 million, that's the number that you're saying.”
Liverpool have lived for years with Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mané and Luis Díaz setting the standard in wide areas. Owen looks at the current squad and sees a gap that needs filling, and fast.
“There’s so many great wide players [at Liverpool] over the years. And it feels like there's a dearth of them, of course, now at Liverpool.”
Muñoz is one answer. Barcola, if he comes, would be another on a completely different financial level.
The question is how far Liverpool are willing to go to close that gap.
Carragher questions Salah’s next step
While Liverpool wrestle with the future of their attack, the man who defined it for a generation has moved on – and not to where many expected.
Mohamed Salah has agreed a two-year deal with Trabzonspor after leaving Anfield this summer. In Turkey, he will be the star attraction. For Jamie Carragher, that’s exactly the issue.
Liverpool’s former defender believes Salah is “too good” for that move.
Speaking on the Football Ramble, Carragher laid out his surprise.
“I never believed he was going to go to Saudi, because number one, he's too good for that. I think he can be playing in Serie A. Turkey for me feels a level too low,” he said.
He pictured Salah in a very different setting.
“I was convinced he'd end up at an AC Milan or Juventus or somewhere like that, maybe his wages were a problem. Looking at him, I don't know him, obviously have never spoken to him.
“Obviously his wage demands have put a few people off but I thought he might almost curb those demands a little bit to almost get a better club.”
Carragher’s argument is about stage as much as status.
“To go to an AC Milan or Juventus or whoever it may be, play at the San Siro, still playing in big games, still playing in Europe. Turkey just feels like... I just think he's better than that.”
From Salah at Trabzonspor to Barcola potentially arriving at Anfield for a record fee, Liverpool are caught between eras: one legend stepping off the main stage, another generation being assembled at great expense.
Muñoz believes Iraola’s system will bring out the best in him. The board believe a huge outlay on Barcola might be unavoidable. Carragher believes Salah belongs on a grander platform than the one he has chosen.
Liverpool’s attack is being rewritten in real time. The only thing left to discover is whether the next chapter can live up to the one that just closed.
