Liverpool Sign Ronald Araujo on Loan from Barcelona
Liverpool have struck a stunning agreement to bring Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo to Anfield on loan for the season, in a move that dramatically reshapes Andoni Iraola’s options at the back.
The 27-year-old Uruguay international arrives on a straight loan, despite signing a long-term contract at Barcelona until 2031 only last year. No option to buy, no complicated add-ons – a pure one-season hit for a club that suddenly found its defensive core stripped bare.
Araujo the emergency pillar
Liverpool’s need was urgent. Ibrahima Konate has gone to Real Madrid, Jeremy Jacquet is talented but untested at this level and not yet fully fit, and the early weeks of pre-season have already bitten hard.
Joe Gomez picked up a muscle injury in Liverpool’s opening pre-season game. Giovanni Leoni, the highly rated teenage centre-back, is still working his way back from an ACL injury. That left Virgil van Dijk as the only fully fit senior centre-back available to Iraola.
Something had to give. Liverpool have turned to a defender forged in one of the most demanding environments in world football.
Araujo joined Barcelona B from Uruguay in 2018 and made his senior debut the following October. From there he grew into a cornerstone of the Catalan defence, amassing more than 200 appearances at the Nou Camp and earning a reputation as one of Europe’s most combative, front-foot centre-backs. Now he steps into a Liverpool back line crying out for exactly that kind of presence.
For Iraola, the move offers immediate relief. Araujo can anchor the defence, cover large spaces, and allow Liverpool to maintain an aggressive line without overburdening Van Dijk or rushing Jacquet back before he is ready.
Jacquet and the fitness puzzle
Liverpool’s summer planning always involved bedding in Jeremy Jacquet, the 21-year-old signed from Rennes. The idea was clear: a gradual transition, with the youngster learning alongside Van Dijk and Konate.
Reality has been far less forgiving.
Jacquet has made fewer than 100 senior appearances in his career and has yet to feature in pre-season. He missed the second half of last season after shoulder surgery, and Liverpool have been cautious with his return. Without minutes in his legs, throwing him straight into a Premier League and Champions League campaign would have been a huge risk.
The knock to Gomez and Leoni’s long-term recovery turned that risk into a full-blown problem. Araujo’s arrival changes the picture. It gives Liverpool breathing space to manage Jacquet’s development properly rather than out of necessity.
Barcola talks stall over huge valuation
While Liverpool have moved decisively for Araujo, their pursuit of Bradley Barcola sits in a very different place.
The club have held preliminary talks with Paris Saint-Germain over the 23-year-old, but there is a major gap between what Liverpool are prepared to pay and what the French champions are demanding.
The Champions League holders value Barcola at £145m, a figure that places him firmly in the elite bracket of European attacking talents. That stance from PSG has made the deal extremely difficult to advance at this stage, with no indication yet of a softening in their position.
So Liverpool, for now, take a major step in defence while their attacking ambitions hit a financial wall. Araujo is through the door. Barcola, at that price, may remain firmly on the other side.
