Liverpool's Pursuit of Bradley Barcola: A Record Transfer in the Making
Liverpool’s pursuit of Bradley Barcola has moved from background noise to full volume, and the numbers involved would rip up the British transfer record.
The PSG winger has made it clear he wants Anfield. Inside the Liverpool camp, he is the top target for the wide positions this summer, the name at the top of every recruitment meeting. Personal terms are not expected to be a stumbling block; the player is described as excited by the project and keen to make the move.
The problem sits in Paris. And it is eye-watering.
A record on the line
PSG, back-to-back Champions League winners and under no pressure to sell, have planted their flag at €170m (£145m). That figure would dwarf the British-record £125m Liverpool paid for Alexander Isak last summer.
Liverpool are ready to go beyond that existing record. They are not prepared to reach PSG’s full asking price. An opening offer is being put together, but the gap between what Liverpool want to pay and what PSG are demanding remains substantial.
So the deal rests on one question: who blinks first?
PSG’s winger dominoes
Barcola’s future has never been just about Barcola. PSG made it clear they would not sanction his departure until two new wingers were through the door.
That condition is now being met.
On Friday, RMC Sport’s Fabrice Hawkins reported that Monaco’s Maghnes Akliouche is “set to sign” for PSG in a €50m deal. Akliouche, who had other options on the table, has prioritised PSG and is effectively coming in to replace Kang-in Lee in the squad structure. Ibrahim Mbaye is also heading for the exit, opening further space in the attacking department.
Fabrizio Romano then stepped in on Saturday with his trademark confirmation, branding Akliouche to PSG as a done deal in principle. The fee: €50m. Contract: until June 2031. Medical: scheduled for next week.
One winger in. One more to go.
Romano quickly followed with news that Mika Godts has given the green light to PSG’s project. Ajax want around €60m, official talks between the clubs are underway, and Godts is ready to accept personal terms if the two sides can close the gap. Inside PSG, the mood is optimistic that this second winger will follow Akliouche through the door.
If both land, the final obstacle PSG themselves put in front of Barcola’s departure will have been cleared.
Liverpool push, PSG hold the line
With that backdrop, attention swings back to Barcola and Liverpool.
Romano, speaking in the early hours of Saturday, outlined the state of play: contacts are ongoing between Liverpool, PSG and the player’s camp. There is no tension over the contract. No dispute over the role. Barcola wants Liverpool, Liverpool want Barcola.
Everything comes back to the fee.
Liverpool must decide how far they are willing to stretch for a player they see as central to their next attacking cycle. They are prepared to invest heavily, but PSG’s valuation is at the extreme end of the market, even for a club that has already lost several attacking players this summer and is still juggling other deals.
Nothing is described as imminent. A bid is expected, and agreement with the player is seen as a formality once the clubs get close. But for now, the real battle is financial, and it is being fought in the space between Liverpool’s ceiling and PSG’s resolve.
PSG, bolstered by the imminent arrival of Akliouche and the advanced move for Godts, will soon have the cover they demanded before even considering Barcola’s exit. Once those signings are locked in, the French champions must decide how much they really want to keep a forward who has set his sights on Anfield.
Liverpool have made their move in intent. The player has shown his hand. PSG are arming themselves with replacements.
The stage is set for one of the defining transfer negotiations of the summer.
