Liverpool's Pursuit of Bradley Barcola Faces PSG's High Price Tag
Liverpool have opened the door on a bold move for Bradley Barcola – but Paris Saint-Germain’s price tag has slammed it shut for now.
Preliminary talks have taken place between the clubs over the 23-year-old winger, yet the gap in valuation is vast. The Champions League holders are understood to want around £145m for a player they signed from Lyon for roughly £40m in the summer of 2023. At that figure, any deal sits firmly in the “difficult” category.
Liverpool have also spoken to Barcola’s camp, aware that the France international is open to the idea of Anfield. The project appeals. The minutes do too.
Barcola has two years left on his PSG contract and has made it clear he will not be signing an extension, frustrated by limited game time in Paris. Despite that, PSG are holding a hard line. They would ideally like to keep him and are in no rush to cash in, even after a summer in which they have already moved on Goncalo Ramos, Randal Kolo Muani and Kang-In Lee.
That stance leaves Liverpool waiting for the French champions to blink. The key to unlocking the move is simple: PSG must soften on the fee.
Iraola’s wide revolution
Andoni Iraola has made one thing obvious in his first window on Merseyside: the wings will define his Liverpool.
His Bournemouth and Rayo Vallecano sides thrived on pace, relentlessness and defensive graft from the flanks. With Mohamed Salah gone, that area of the pitch has become the central theme of Liverpool’s recruitment.
The plan is clear. By the end of the window, Liverpool want five wingers in the squad, one of them a younger prospect to develop alongside more established options. Barcola, with nine major trophies and two Champions League titles collected in the last two years, would sit firmly in the “ready-made” category – a high-end piece in Iraola’s new jigsaw.
Yet he is not the only PSG wide player in Liverpool’s sights.
Talks have also taken place over Ibrahim Mbaye, the 18-year-old who predominantly operates from the right. Liverpool have explored the conditions of a deal and the teenager is believed to be keen on a move to Anfield. Crucially, their pursuit of Mbaye is independent of the Barcola situation. The club could sign the youngster and still go for another, more experienced winger.
PSG stack wide options – but won’t be pushed
On the face of it, PSG’s business this week might have encouraged Liverpool.
The French champions completed a £42.8m deal for Magnes Akliouche from Monaco on Thursday, a player Liverpool had also monitored. Akliouche, who grew up in the Paris region, always leaned towards PSG once their interest hardened, and he has now got his move.
PSG are also in advanced talks with Ajax over winger Mika Godts. Two wide players in, three forwards already out, and a contract stand-off with Barcola: the situation looks ripe for an exit.
Inside PSG, the picture is different. Akliouche and Godts are not being lined up as replacements for Barcola, and their arrivals do not automatically push him towards the door. The club still see him as part of their future and are prepared to hold that line unless an offer comes close to their valuation.
That leaves Liverpool – and others – on the outside, watching.
Arsenal lurking in the background
Arsenal are among the clubs keeping a close eye on developments. After missing out on Vinicius Junior when he extended his contract at Real Madrid, Mikel Arteta’s side also hold an interest in Barcola as they scan the market for an elite wide option.
For now, though, this is a stand-off shaped by price and patience. Liverpool know Barcola wants more football and that the chance to join Iraola’s high-energy, winger-driven system appeals to him. They know PSG paid far less than the figure now being quoted. They also know that, at some point, contract leverage tends to shift.
The question is whether that moment arrives before this window closes – and whether Liverpool are prepared to wait for it.
