Liverpool's Barcola Talks Stall as Arsenal Eyes Move
Liverpool’s search for a successor to Mohamed Salah has hit a hard wall in Paris – and Arsenal are quietly watching it all unfold.
The Anfield hierarchy have been locked in negotiations with Paris Saint-Germain over Bradley Barcola, identified as a leading candidate to fill the void left by Salah’s surprise free transfer to Trabzonspor last week. The France winger is high on Liverpool’s list. The price is even higher.
PSG have set their valuation at around £145million.
That figure has barely moved. Liverpool’s stance has been just as firm: they will not go that high.
Barcola is understood to be keen on the move, hungry for more minutes and a more central role than he currently enjoys in Paris. His wishes, though, are not moving the needle at the Parc des Princes. PSG are holding their line and, as things stand, Liverpool are not prepared to cross it.
The result is a transfer impasse with the window ticking down. With deadline day only three weeks away, the mood on Merseyside is shifting from pursuit to pragmatism. Liverpool are now prepared to step away from the table and divert their efforts towards other options to strengthen Andoni Iraola’s thin squad.
One of those options sits in the same dressing room as Barcola. Ibrahim Mbaye, the highly rated 18-year-old at PSG, has emerged as an alternative target. It would be a very different type of deal: a younger, less proven profile, but potentially far more attainable in both fee and structure.
Liverpool’s readiness to walk, though, does not just change their own plans. It could blow the race for Barcola wide open.
Arsenal, still hunting a marquee addition in attack, are understood to hold a genuine interest in the Frenchman. Their push for Vinicius Junior collapsed when the Brazilian chose to sign a new long-term contract with Real Madrid, leaving Mikel Arteta and the recruitment team searching for another headline signing in the final third.
They have already added Christos Tzolis on the left, but that has not closed the door on another wide forward. Far from it. Arsenal are expected to monitor Barcola’s situation closely, waiting to see whether Liverpool’s reluctance hardens into a full withdrawal from talks. If that happens, the path to Paris could clear for the Gunners.
Arteta’s Intentions
Arteta has already gone on record about his intentions for the remainder of the window. “Well, that's what we're trying to do,” he said when asked about further additions. “If we have the right player in the market to make us much better, we are very looking forward to that.”
Those words came against the backdrop of serious spending. Arsenal paid £75m to land Bruno Guimaraes last week, strengthening the heart of their midfield. The focus now is on firepower. A forward who can change games, tilt tight contests, and carry some of the attacking burden in a season where expectations at the Emirates have never been higher.
For Liverpool, the equation is more brutal. Lose Salah, chase Barcola, hit a valuation they consider excessive, and pivot. Their recruitment team have built a reputation on walking away from deals that don’t make sense on their terms. This one is threatening to join that list.
PSG, meanwhile, hold the strongest hand. A valuable young winger under contract, a sky-high price tag they are refusing to soften, and more than one Premier League giant circling.
If Liverpool do step aside, Arsenal’s patience will be tested. Do they match PSG’s demands for Barcola after already committing heavily to Guimaraes? Or do they, too, decide that Paris is asking for too much and turn to another name entirely in a market running out of time and elite options?
