Liverpool Eyes Alessandro Bastoni as Defensive Solution

Liverpool’s search for a new defensive pillar may have just opened up in the most inviting way.

Alessandro Bastoni, fresh from celebrating a third Serie A title with Inter Milan, is again at the centre of transfer intrigue. The Italy international has long been admired across Europe, with Barcelona heavily linked as they reshape under Hansi Flick. Liverpool, under Arne Slot, have also been mentioned in dispatches, but until now the Catalan giants looked like the heavyweight rival in any pursuit.

That contest may be fading.

Reports in Spain suggest Flick and Barcelona are cooling their interest in the left-footed centre-back. The German is said to want exactly that profile – a left-footer who can step into a high line – but with one non‑negotiable trait: elite recovery speed. In a side that defends on the halfway line and dares opponents to run in behind, that detail matters.

According to Mundo Deportivo, Bastoni does not perfectly match that requirement. The same reports state that Barcelona contacted the defender in January and that he was more than open to the idea of playing at Camp Nou. If Flick has shifted the parameters, as claimed, Bastoni’s route to the Blaugrana suddenly looks far less clear.

And that is where Liverpool enter the frame with far greater freedom.

Slot inherits a squad light on natural left-footed central defenders. For a coach who values structure, angles and progressive build-up from the back, that imbalance is not a minor detail. Football Insider have reported that Bastoni has been identified as a potential solution, and at 27 he offers something Liverpool’s recent defensive recruits cannot yet provide: immediate, proven authority at the highest level.

Giovanni Leoni and Jeremy Jacquet have arrived as investments for tomorrow, not today. Both are coming off serious, season-ending injuries and both are viewed as long-term projects rather than instant starters. Bastoni, by contrast, walks straight into a back line and a dressing room with medals and 43 caps for Italy behind him, having won Serie A under Antonio Conte, Simone Inzaghi and most recently Cristian Chivu.

There is, of course, a familiar obstacle. Inter do not sound remotely keen to cash in.

Sporting director Piero Ausilio underlined that stance in blunt terms: “We haven’t received any offers for Bastoni. He’s a valuable player for Inter and for Italy, a strong player, an incredible footballer, and we want him to stay.” Inter have never been shy negotiators. Any club trying to prise away a cornerstone of their defence will need deep pockets and a strong stomach.

For Liverpool, the question is whether this is the moment to strike. A rare, top-level left-footed centre-back potentially available. A tactical fit for Slot. A rival suitor apparently stepping back.

All of this unfolds as the Reds move to secure what they already have. Ibrahima Konaté is understood to be close to agreeing a new contract at Anfield, despite rumours of Real Madrid circling with the lure of a free transfer when his current deal runs down. Tie down Konaté, add a player of Bastoni’s calibre on the opposite side, and Liverpool’s central defensive landscape changes in an instant.

The door to Bastoni will not stay ajar forever. The real test now is whether Liverpool are prepared to walk through it.
