Barcelona Registers Summer Signings for La Liga Title Defense
FC Barcelona will begin their La Liga title defence with a significant weight lifted: Hansi Flick’s three headline summer signings are all officially registered for first-team action.
On Sunday, the champions head five hours south by road to Elche, chasing a third straight league crown for the first time since Pep Guardiola stalked the Camp Nou touchline. The domestic story is compelling enough, but everyone around the club knows the deeper craving. Given the choice, most Culers would swap another league trophy for a serious tilt at the Champions League.
To do that, even a strong squad needs fresh blood. This summer, for the first time since 2022, Barcelona have actually been able to flex some financial muscle again in the market. The difference this time is striking: big names have arrived, and the club has managed to get them registered without the usual drama.
No drawn-out sagas. No half-season waits. No repeat of the Dani Olmo situation, when the Spain international was left in limbo for months after arriving from RB Leipzig.
Gordon, Adeyemi and Rodri all cleared
The biggest headline is that all three marquee additions – Anthony Gordon, Karim Adeyemi and Rodri – are now eligible for La Liga. Flick can use them from day one of the season, at least on paper.
Barcelona’s sporting department, led by Deco, moved early for Gordon. The club wrapped up a deal with Newcastle United before the World Cup, a decision that looks smarter by the day. Had they waited until after the winger’s explosive run to the semifinals with England – where he scored in the defeat to Argentina – the fee could easily have ballooned beyond the €80 million already paid.
Gordon is expected to operate either off the left or as a false nine, injecting pace and aggression into the front line and turning up the heat on Raphinha for minutes in the attacking positions.
On the opposite flank, Adeyemi arrives as a different kind of coup. At €22 million plus up to €7 million in add-ons, the former Borussia Dortmund forward has the profile of a classic Barcelona value signing. He offers depth behind Lamine Yamal on the right, but his versatility is the real asset: Adeyemi can switch wings or step into a central striking role if required.
He has already shown promising signs in preseason, combining fluidly with both Raphinha and Gordon across the front three. Flick now has the option of a high-speed, high-pressing attacking trident that looks built for modern European football.
Then there is Rodri. The midfielder arrives from Manchester City in a deal that could reach €76.5 million, putting him among the most expensive signings in the club’s history. His presence is designed to reshape the core of the team, to anchor a side that has sometimes looked fragile in the biggest moments.
For supporters, the key detail is simple: all three are registered, and all three are available for selection against Elche.
Rodri likely to wait for debut
There is, however, a small asterisk. While Gordon and Adeyemi are ready to go, Rodri’s first appearance in Blaugrana colours will almost certainly have to wait.
The midfielder trained individually away from the group on Saturday and is not expected to travel with the squad for the league opener. Flick and the medical staff will not rush a player who is central to the club’s long-term plan.
Even so, the mood around Barcelona is different. The signings are in. The paperwork is done. The coach has options.
Now comes the real test: can this refreshed, fully registered squad turn financial stability and smart timing into another era of dominance – and finally, a serious assault on Europe?
