The coin stayed in the referee’s pocket in Lithuania this weekend. Tradition, for once, gave way to folklore.
In the top-flight A Lyga, officials walked to the centre circle not with a coin in hand, but with baskets of brightly coloured Easter eggs, turning a routine pre-match formality into a celebration of local culture that stole the spotlight across the football world.
From coin toss to “Egg Tapping Challenge”
Just before kick-off, captains gathered as usual. Everything looked familiar until the baskets appeared.
Instead of watching a coin spin in the air, the skippers were invited into the “Egg Tapping Challenge” — a ritual rooted in Baltic Easter customs. Each captain picked an egg. Then, in front of players, officials and a curious crowd, they tapped their chosen eggs against each other.
One crack decides it. The egg that stays intact wins. Its owner earns the right to choose either to kick off or which side of the pitch to defend, mirroring the outcome of a standard toss but wrapped in something far more personal to the region’s heritage.
On paper, FIFA regulations are clear: a coin toss precedes every match, with the winner deciding kick-off or ends. In Lithuania, for one festive round, that cold piece of metal gave way to painted shells and a nod to history — an unusual, temporary twist that still respected the spirit of the law.
Viral moment in top-of-the-table clash
The images did the rest.
Footage of the ritual spread rapidly on social media, none more striking than from the top-of-the-table clash between FK Žalgiris Vilnius and FK Kauno Žalgiris. The two captains, usually steeled for a title-shaping battle, leaned over the eggs like children at a family gathering, grinning as they tapped for the right to dictate the early terms.
The crowd loved it. Laughter, applause, phones in the air. For a few seconds, rivalry paused and the stadium became a stage for something deeper than the league table — a reminder that football still has room for identity, colour and a sense of play.
Then the shells broke, the decision was made, and the mood snapped back to competition.
FK Kauno Žalgiris spoil the party
If the ritual belonged to the occasion, the match itself belonged to FK Kauno Žalgiris.
Despite the festive atmosphere in Vilnius and the energy pouring from the stands, the home side failed to turn that emotion into an advantage. FK Kauno Žalgiris imposed themselves with authority, took control away from home and walked off with a commanding 3-0 victory over FK Žalgiris Vilnius.
It was not just a scoreline. It was a statement.
On a day when Lithuanian football showed a different face to the world, the visitors underlined their own ambitions, tightening the title race and adding an edge to what might otherwise have been remembered purely as a charming one-off.
The eggs may have decided who kicked off. FK Kauno Žalgiris decided everything else.
