Lionel Messi Scores 101st Goal as Inter Miami Draws with San Diego FC Amid Defensive Concerns

Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez both scored for Inter Miami, yet defensive lapses led to a 2-2 draw against San Diego FC in an intense MLS encounter. New coach Kily Gonzalez expressed frustration over his team's errors at the back as Miami missed an opportunity to climb higher in the Eastern Conference.

Messi’s Milestone Goal

Messi notched his 101st goal for Inter Miami with a signature free-kick that leveled the score after Anders Dreyer opened the match early for San Diego. Suarez seemed to have sealed victory for Miami by netting in the 74th minute, but Dreyer's late second goal denied them all three points.

  • Final Score: Inter Miami 2 - 2 San Diego FC
  • Goalscorers: Messi (Free-kick), Suarez (Miami); Dreyer (2) (San Diego)
  • Match Date: Sunday, 21 September 2026

This marked Inter Miami’s fourth consecutive draw in MLS play, and it was a tough start for Gonzalez on the sidelines. The team currently sits third in the Eastern Conference, trailing leaders Nashville by 11 points.

Gonzalez Criticizes Defensive Mistakes

Despite the offensive spark from Messi and Suarez, Gonzalez was vocal about his team's defensive shortcomings. After Dreyer capitalized on a ball over Miami's defense late in the game, the new manager made his disappointment clear.

"We’ve been here only four days and haven’t had proper training. Defensively, we must be much stronger," Gonzalez said. "We can’t afford these defensive horrors; they cost us dearly. That last situation should never have happened. It’s strange to be so close to winning, yet nearly lose. Our goalkeeper was the only reason we avoided defeat."

Signs of Complacency After Recent Success

Messi’s first-half strike was his 20th league goal this season and his eighth free-kick goal since joining MLS in 2023. This came shortly after he reached 100 goals for Inter Miami during the Campeones Cup win over Cruz Azul. Gonzalez suggested that their recent triumph might have led to some loss of focus.

"The Campeones Cup win may have subconsciously affected the team, especially in the first half, causing some complacency," the manager admitted. "At a club where every game demands a win, we need to step up. On the bright side, we showed good moments, but I must improve our defense since that worries me most."
