Robert Lewandowski Reflects on Lamine Yamal's Role in Spain's 2026 World Cup Win
Robert Lewandowski, former striker for Barcelona, shared his thoughts on why young talent Lamine Yamal didn’t show his full potential during the 2026 World Cup, despite Spain’s historic victory. The teenage star had just returned from a hamstring injury that kept him out of action during the end of Barcelona’s La Liga season.
Injury Impacted Yamal's Form
Yamal arrived at the tournament fresh off an eight-week break due to injury. Spain’s coach, Luis de la Fuente, carefully limited Yamal’s minutes early on to manage his condition. Even so, the 19-year-old made eight appearances, scored once in 616 minutes, and completed the highest number of dribbles in the tournament with 35. His efforts contributed to Spain’s wins over Portugal, France, and Argentina in the final.
Lewandowski’s Take on Yamal’s Condition
"Honestly, no, we didn’t see his best at this tournament," Lewandowski told ESPN. "The best version of Lamine for me wasn’t last season but two seasons ago. He’s still young, came after injury, and hadn’t played for eight weeks. It’s tough jumping straight into World Cup matches without enough training. But he showed really good quality. The team helped him, and he helped the whole team. That cooperation was perfect."
Support Rooted in Barcelona Ties
Lewandowski's Poland did not qualify for the World Cup, but he supported Spain in the final against Argentina because of his close relationships with his former teammates at Barcelona. He explained, "I know many players from Spain and spent a lot of time with them in Barcelona, so I supported them a lot. I only personally know Leo from Argentina, who had won the last World Cup. Knowing your teammates makes it easier to back the team. I was happy because Spain is young, talented, and ready for success."

After the World Cup and a break, Yamal will focus on regaining full fitness as he prepares for the upcoming season with Barcelona. Lewandowski has started a new journey in Major League Soccer with Chicago Fire, debuting against Inter Miami CF.
