Lennart Karl Out of 2026 World Cup: Major Blow for Germany

Germany’s World Cup plans have taken a sharp, unwelcome turn. Lennart Karl, one of Bayern Munich’s most productive attacking options this season, will miss the 2026 FIFA World Cup after picking up an injury in training on Friday, according to German newspaper Bild.

The setback comes brutally late in the preparation phase. Karl is expected to be withdrawn from Julian Nagelsmann’s squad, forcing the national team to nominate a replacement before the tournament begins.

“Lennart suffered an injury in training and, honestly, it doesn't look good. We have to wait for the diagnosis and then decide whether he can realistically make the World Cup or if we need to call up a replacement,” the Germany coach said, before the final decision confirmed the worst-case scenario.

For Karl, the timing could hardly be crueller. He was not a guaranteed starter at Bayern Munich, but he had become a trusted weapon in a squad stacked with attacking talent. Used intelligently and often from the bench, the attacking midfielder delivered end product: 17 direct goal contributions this season through goals and assists, numbers that turned him into a genuine difference-maker in tight games.

That productivity, coupled with his versatility across the attacking line, had made him a valuable tool for Nagelsmann. Karl offered Germany something coaches covet at major tournaments: a player who can change the rhythm of a match in the final half-hour, find gaps between the lines, and shift seamlessly across the front positions.

Now that option is gone.

For a national team still trying to repair its reputation after a string of disappointing major tournaments, the loss stings. Germany are attempting to climb back into the company of the world’s elite, to look and feel like a tournament heavyweight again. Every detail matters, every tactical card counts.

Karl’s injury doesn’t rewrite the blueprint, but it does remove a carefully chosen piece. Nagelsmann must now decide who steps into the space Karl leaves behind — and whether anyone in the wider pool can replicate his blend of impact, flexibility, and quiet reliability when the spotlight burns brightest.
