Leanne Kiernan Joins Newcastle United: A Fresh Start
Leanne Kiernan has swapped Merseyside for Tyneside, completing her move to Newcastle United in a deal that underlines the club’s growing ambition in the women’s game.
The Ireland international arrives for an undisclosed fee after five years with Liverpool, where she became a trusted part of the Reds’ attack. Seventy-six appearances, 23 goals, and a reputation as a forward who never stops running – that’s the body of work Newcastle have bought into.
Her journey to this point has been anything but straightforward. After leaving Shelbourne in 2018, Kiernan crossed the water to join West Ham United, making 40 appearances over three seasons and adapting quickly to the demands of English football. From there came Liverpool, promotion battles, injury setbacks, and the grind of establishing herself in one of the most competitive environments in the women’s game.
Last season, she stepped away on loan to Nottingham Forest in the Barclays Women’s Championship, using the second half of the campaign to sharpen her edge and find rhythm again. Newcastle now hope to be the club that fully unlocks that blend of pace, movement, and penalty-box instinct.
For Kiernan, this move is more than a change of shirt.
“I’m really excited. I’m looking forward to a fresh start and meeting the fans,” she said. “It was a dream of mine to come and play professionally and to go to a club like Newcastle, it really felt right when the contact came in.
“I would say I’m a quick attacker in behind, so I feel like I can bring my strengths and hopefully score loads of goals to help the team out.”
That directness is exactly what Tanya Oxtoby wants at the top end of the pitch. The Newcastle manager has built a side that thrives on speed and aggression in transition, and Kiernan fits neatly into that blueprint.
“Leanne brings a wealth of experience from the WSL, WSL2, and her national team to our squad and has shown in all those experiences the quality that she has,” Oxtoby said. “She adds versatility to the forward line, with her pace and intelligent movement making her a threat in the way we want to play. At 27, Kiernan arrives in what should be her prime years. She already has 38 caps for Ireland since her debut in 2016, a reminder that this is not a prospect Newcastle are taking a chance on, but a seasoned international stepping into a new phase of her career.
