Leanne Kiernan Joins Newcastle from Liverpool in WSL2 Move
Newcastle have underlined their intent in the women’s game by prising Republic of Ireland striker Leanne Kiernan away from Liverpool for an undisclosed fee.
At 27, Kiernan arrives on Tyneside with the kind of résumé that turns heads in the second tier. Twenty-three goals in 76 games for Liverpool, a promotion campaign led from the front, and the experience of top-flight battles and international football in her locker.
She was central to Liverpool’s rise in 2022, driving them out of the Championship as champions and finishing as the club’s top scorer with 13 league goals. When the pressure was on, she delivered. That season effectively reintroduced her as one of the division’s most dangerous runners in behind.
Game time became harder to come by, though, and the second half of last season took her to Nottingham Forest in WSL2 on loan. The move kept her sharp, kept her visible, and kept her on the radar of clubs looking for proven attacking quality.
Now comes the reset.
"I'm really excited. I’m looking forward to a fresh start and meeting the fans," Kiernan said after sealing the switch. "It was a dream of mine to come and play professionally and to go to a club like Newcastle, it really felt right when the contact came in.
"I would say I’m a quick attacker in behind, so I feel like I can bring my strengths and hopefully score loads of goal to help the team out."
For Newcastle, this is not just another signing. It is a statement that their project has enough pull to tempt a player established at a club of Liverpool’s stature, with 38 Ireland caps already to her name and the hunger to become a cornerstone in England rather than a squad option.
Manager Tanya Oxtoby knows exactly what she is getting.
"Leanne brings a wealth of experience from the WSL, WSL2, and her national team to our squad and has shown in all those experiences the quality that she has," the Magpies boss said. "She adds versatility to the forward line, with her pace and intelligent movement making her a threat in the way we want to play. We are looking forward to what she will bring to our squad."
Pace. Movement. Goals. On paper, it fits perfectly with a side eager to climb and unwilling to tiptoe their way through the division.
For Kiernan, this is more than a change of shirt. It is a chance to move from useful contributor to undisputed focal point, to turn those 38 international caps and that promotion pedigree into something more permanent in the English game.
