Kevin De Bruyne Confirms Belgium Future and Shares Thoughts on Mark van Bommel

Kevin De Bruyne, the experienced midfielder for Belgium and Napoli, has confirmed he will continue his international career with the national team under the leadership of new head coach Mark van Bommel. At 35 years old, De Bruyne aims for Euro 2028 as a possible endpoint but remains open beyond that.

De Bruyne Ends Retirement Rumors

After returning to the Tubize training centre, De Bruyne dismissed any serious thought of stepping away from international football following the World Cup. Despite some senior players like Axel Witsel retiring and Thibaut Courtois choosing to skip the Nations League, De Bruyne feels driven to keep playing.

He views the European Championship in 2028, to be held in the United Kingdom and Ireland, as a sensible moment to say farewell, though he hasn’t ruled out continuing further.

Positive First Impressions of Van Bommel

De Bruyne met with Mark van Bommel in Naples and shared favorable impressions about the new coach. The former midfielder’s direct style resonated well with De Bruyne, who appreciates clear communication.

"A typical Dutchman," De Bruyne laughed. "Quite direct in his demeanour. That suits me well, just someone who says it like it is. Van Bommel asked me what I wanted to do. I told him that I was here to help him."

Motivated by Teammates and Physical Condition

The playmaker credited his teammates for encouraging him to stay involved with the national team. Younger squad members actively urged him not to retire, which gave him extra energy and motivation.

He also noted surprise at how fit he remains with Napoli, where he has played several full matches recently.

"Many players asked me to stay with the Red Devils after the World Cup. That gives me energy," De Bruyne said. "As long as I still have that motivation, why shouldn’t I keep going? Pushing your limits every day and trying to play as well as possible."

Veteran Role to Guide Belgium's Next Generation

De Bruyne understands that Belgium is entering a key transitional phase. With younger players needing to take on leadership roles, the 124-cap veteran wants to help them prepare during upcoming UEFA Nations League games against France, Italy, and Turkey.

"I wouldn’t want the younger players to suddenly experience a shock when we retire," De Bruyne explained. "They need to feel now what it is like to carry a team."
