Juventus Pursues Zirkzee Amid David's Uncertain Future
The call from Manchester has arrived. Juventus now have the green light from the Red Devils to explore a loan deal for Joshua Zirkzee, and the Bianconeri are moving fast.
After two muted years in the Premier League, the 2001-born forward is looking back toward Italy with something stronger than simple curiosity. He has made no secret of his nostalgia for Serie A and has already given full approval to the idea of joining Juventus. For a club trying to reshape its attack without breaking its balance sheet, the timing could hardly be better.
David fading, Zirkzee rising
The shift began to feel real thousands of miles from Turin. Jonathan David’s early withdrawal in a friendly against Chelsea in Hong Kong looked innocuous on the surface, but around Continassa it carried a different weight. It felt like a symbolic moment: the beginning of a summer handover in attack.
David’s future in Turin grows less certain by the day. His first season brought just eight goals, far from the ruthless form he showed at Lille. If a high-level attacker like Zirkzee can be brought in on a manageable deal, the Canadian may be forced to weigh an exit after only one season.
Massara’s calculated gamble
At the heart of the operation is Ricky Massara. The sporting director at Continassa is driving the talks, working on the fine print of a deal he believes Juventus cannot afford to miss.
Massara’s aim is clear: a straight loan, no obligation to buy. In a market where prices are inflated and mistakes are punished over several balance sheets, that structure matters. Juventus have already burned through a significant chunk of their transfer budget, having committed €38 million plus €12m in guaranteed add-ons to bring in Randal Kolo Muani from Paris Saint-Germain.
That investment limits what they can do now. It also explains Massara’s insistence on a low-risk formula for Zirkzee. He knows the player well. During his time at Roma, he tried to bring the former Bologna forward to the capital. That move never materialised, but the admiration never faded. Now, with Juventus, he is accelerating negotiations to finally land a player he has long viewed as a perfect fit for Italian football.
Not a classic No 9, but a difference-maker
Zirkzee is not a pure central striker in the traditional sense. He drifts, links, creates. He prefers to orchestrate rather than simply finish. For Luciano Spalletti, that profile is a feature, not a flaw.
The Dutchman has already shown in Serie A that he can operate at a high level, dropping between the lines, combining with midfielders, and lifting the technical ceiling of an entire attack. In a Juventus side that has sometimes lacked fluency and imagination in the final third, his presence would instantly change the dynamic.
Spalletti would gain an attacker capable of interpreting multiple roles across the front line, someone who can unlock tight games with a pass as much as with a shot. For a club trying to modernise its football while staying competitive, that versatility is gold.
One crucial domino: Jonathan David
There is, however, a condition that underpins everything. Zirkzee’s arrival hinges on resolving David’s situation.
The Canadian wants another chance in Turin. He believes he can rediscover the ruthless edge that made him one of Europe’s most sought-after strikers at Lille. Eight goals in his debut season with Juventus did not match expectations, his own or the club’s, and he is determined to prove that version of himself was temporary.
Juventus recognise his commitment. They also recognise the market opportunity. A loan move for a player of Zirkzee’s calibre, with no obligation to buy, is rare at this level. If Massara can close that deal, David may have to confront the reality that his best route back to his Lille-level form could lie away from Turin.
Until that domino falls, Juventus cannot fully lock in the agreement with United.
Backup plans on standby
Talks with the Red Devils are expected to intensify in the coming days as Massara pushes to finalise terms. The structure is delicate, the timing even more so. A late collapse cannot be ruled out, and Juventus know it.
They have prepared for that scenario. The club continue to keep an eye on several forwards likely to leave Chelsea before the window shuts. Nicolas Jackson, Emmanuel Emegha, and Liam Delap remain on the list as potential alternatives to reinforce Spalletti’s front line if the Zirkzee avenue closes unexpectedly.
For now, though, all roads lead toward one target. Juventus have the green light, a director obsessed with the deal, and a player eager to return to a league that suits his game.
The question is no longer whether Zirkzee fits Juventus. It’s whether the club are ready to let go of Jonathan David to make room for a new leader of their attack.
