Juventus Goalkeeping Dilemma: Di Gregorio and Perin on the Move
Juventus’ goalkeeping situation was supposed to quiet down once Guglielmo Vicario walked through the door on a season-long loan.
It has done anything but.
Barely into August, Juventus are suddenly braced to lose both of the men who have shared the gloves over the past two seasons. Michele Di Gregorio, last year’s starter, has accepted that his time is up in Turin and is heading to the Premier League, set to join Bournemouth on a season-long loan. Mattia Perin, the long-serving deputy, is now also close to the exit, with a move to Serie B side Palermo on the table in the final days of the window.
Di Gregorio’s deal will not be a simple audition. Multiple reports say Bournemouth will have an option to buy, set at around €14–15 million. If he convinces in England, Juventus may never see him again.
Perin’s situation is different. Talks between Juventus and Palermo are focused on a permanent transfer, with the two clubs still haggling over the final fee. The contract offer from Palermo is described as strong, and for the first time in years Perin would have the guarantee of being a regular starter.
That would mark a real shift. Perin has long been viewed as the consummate professional squad player, apparently happy to play his 10–15 games a season in Turin rather than chase a starting role at a smaller club. If he signs off on Palermo, it will be a clear break from that comfort zone.
For now, the reality is stark. Heading into Sunday’s Serie A opener away to Frosinone, only Vicario and veteran third-choice Carlo Pinsoglio are certain to be on the teamsheet. The new arrival and the dressing-room “dad.” Everyone else is either gone or packing.
Letting Di Gregorio go is one thing. His “adventurous” campaign, littered with errors and soft goals at the near post, left scars on a season that ended with Juventus slumping to sixth. Allowing Perin to drop to Serie B feels different. It cuts deeper into the club’s sense of continuity and experience in a position that already cost them dearly.
Maybe that is exactly the point. Maybe the hierarchy has decided that, Pinsoglio aside, the goalkeeping department needed a complete reset after last year’s mistakes.
If Perin follows Di Gregorio out of the door, Juventus will have bet big on that reset working — and quickly.
