Joshua vs Fury Set for December Clash in Cardiff

After years of speculation, the heavyweight showdown between Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury is official. The British boxing stars will meet at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff on Friday, 11 December. Fans worldwide can catch the fight live on Netflix.

The location had been a sticking point, with talks leaning toward New York City's Madison Square Garden, a move that stirred controversy. Instead, the match will stay in the UK, although the ring walks might happen early the next morning to suit American viewers.

Background on the Fighters

Both Joshua, 36, and Fury, 38, are two-time world heavyweight champions. Their potential clash has been debated for nearly ten years. They were once scheduled to fight in 2021, but that fell through due to legal threats from Deontay Wilder. Fury chose to face Wilder in a trilogy fight, defeating him to keep the WBC title. Meanwhile, Joshua lost his unified titles to Oleksandr Usyk that same month.

Joshua's career took hits with losses to Usyk in both 2021 and a rematch in 2022, while Usyk also defeated Fury twice in 2024. Despite their defeats and loss of titles, the prospect of Joshua vs Fury continued to intrigue boxing fans.

Recent Fights and Build-Up

In April, Fury came back from his fifth retirement with a points win over Arslanbek Makhmudov. Joshua watched ringside before officially signing the fight. Both men had warm-up fights: Joshua knocked out Jake Paul in December, a fight occurring shortly before he survived a tragic car crash that claimed the lives of two teammates.

Joshua then fought Kristian Prenga in July, overcoming two first-round knockdowns to win by second-round knockout. Fury beat 46-year-old Mariusz Wach in Thailand around the same time, though the bout was not televised.

Negotiations and Venue Decisions

Saudi matchmaker Turki Alalshikh suggested a November date at London's Wembley Stadium but noted ring walks would have to be at 2 am GMT to reach a global audience. Joshua’s contract specified a UK venue, while Fury's allowed more flexibility. Although some pushed for a US location, Joshua and promoter Eddie Hearn opposed this, keeping the fight in the UK.

"Two of the best heavyweights of this generation, finally in the ring together," said Alalshikh. "This will be one of the biggest fights in boxing history. I am very happy to make this fight happen for the fans."
