Inter's Josep Martinez Confident in Italy's Rebound After World Cup Setbacks

Josep Martinez, goalkeeper for Inter Milan, has expressed strong optimism about the future of the Italian national team, Gli Azzurri, following their unusual absence from three straight World Cups. Martinez believes Italy still possesses high-quality players and that rebuilding confidence is key.

Assessing Italy's Struggles

The Spanish keeper thinks the recent failures are more about mindset than talent. Missing the World Cup thrice in a row caused a serious blow to the team's confidence. Under Roberto Mancini, the squad is undergoing a transition with younger players being introduced to reshape Italy’s style and identity.

Confidence Over Quality

Having competed against and alongside top Italian players in Serie A, Martinez is certain the skill level remains high. In an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport, he said, "Honestly, I see a lot of potential in Italy. They need to rediscover a defined playing model, but there’s no lack of quality. There are several high-level Inter players and many other valid elements with them. They need to regain confidence after the disappointment of missing the World Cup; for me, it’s more a mental thing than a quality issue."

Martinez Returns to Spain Squad

On a personal note, Martinez recently earned a call-up back to the Spanish national team after nearly two years, filling in due to an injury to Joan Garcia. This marks his return since his first and only senior cap in June 2021. He will compete with David Raya and Unai Simon for the goalkeeper position.

Upcoming Test Against France

The real challenge for Italy’s young team is looming. On Friday, they face France at the Stade de France in the UEFA Nations League Group A1. Mancini must craft a strategy to counter a strong French side led by coach Zinedine Zidane. Getting a positive result in Paris is crucial to keep morale up and maintain hopes for advancing in the tournament.
