Jose Mourinho ‘Furious’ as Rodri Chooses Barcelona Over Real Madrid

The plan was simple. Real Madrid would bring the best midfielder at the World Cup to the Bernabeu, plug the Toni Kroos and Luka Modric‑shaped holes in their engine room, and swing the balance of power back across Spain.

Then, in the space of a day, it collapsed.

According to SPORT, Jose Mourinho has been left “furious” after Rodri – fresh from captaining Spain to World Cup glory and being named the tournament’s best player – turned his back on a move to Madrid and agreed terms instead with FC Barcelona.

For weeks, Rodri looked Bernabeu-bound. The profile fit, the need was obvious, and the money, by all accounts, was strong. This was the kind of heavyweight operation Florentino Perez usually finishes with a flourish and a photo on the presidential balcony.

On Thursday, the script flipped.

Reports emerged that negotiations between Real Madrid and Manchester City had broken down. Almost immediately, word followed that Barcelona had entered the race for the 30-year-old. While Madrid hesitated, Barça acted.

The decisive moment, according to the same reports, came with a call from Hansi Flick. The new Barcelona coach spoke directly with Rodri and convinced him to commit to the Catalan project. Personal terms were agreed, leaving Barcelona and City to thrash out a fee for a summer transfer.

In Madrid, the reaction has been volcanic.

Perez, long accustomed to getting his way in the market, is said to be incensed that Rodri rejected what is believed to have been a powerful personal offer from Real. The insult cuts deeper because the midfielder has not just walked away from Madrid – he is walking straight into the other half of El Clasico.

If Perez is angry, Mourinho is raging. SPORT reports that the Portuguese manager “couldn’t believe the news” when he was informed Rodri had turned down Madrid and chosen Barcelona. This was the player Mourinho wanted to build his midfield around, the organiser to restore control in the centre of the pitch. In one phone call, that vision evaporated.

The frustration is not only aimed at Rodri’s decision. Mourinho has also, according to the report, vented at the club’s hierarchy. He has been told there are no plans to reinforce the midfield, with the argument that the current market does not offer options of sufficient quality. From the manager’s perspective, that line rings hollow when a player of Rodri’s stature was within reach and is now heading to their greatest rival.

Inside the club, there is also the belief that the squad is effectively “full”. This summer has already brought a flurry of arrivals: Bernardo Silva, Marc Cucurella, Denzel Dumfries, Carlos Espi, Ibrahima Konate and Yan Diomande have all joined. On paper, the squad looks deep. On the pitch, the gaps are more specific.

Nowhere is that more evident than in midfield.

Since the departures of Kroos and Modric in 2024 and 2025, Madrid have struggled to control games in the way that defined their greatest eras. The ball has slipped away too easily, the tempo has been dictated by opponents too often. The consequence has been brutal: while Barcelona have lifted five of the last six domestic trophies, Madrid have gone through a trophyless spell that would once have been unthinkable.

Rodri looked like the answer. The metronome, the shield, the leader. The missing piece.

Instead, he is on the brink of becoming the symbol of something else entirely: Barcelona’s growing authority in the market and Madrid’s inability to close the one deal that could have reshaped the rivalry.

There is another sting. Real Madrid have also dragged their feet over a possible move for Enzo Fernandez from Chelsea. As the window ticks on, the pattern is becoming hard to ignore: clear needs identified, elite targets available, decisive moves lacking.

So Mourinho must now turn back to what he has. Bernardo Silva’s craft, the versatility of the new full-backs, the defensive steel of Konate and Diomande – all of it will have to compensate for a midfield that still lacks a true conductor.

In Spain, and especially in an era where Barcelona have reasserted themselves domestically, that is a brutal challenge. If Rodri walks out at Camp Nou in blaugrana next season, dictating games and lifting more silverware, the question will not be why he chose Barça.

It will be how Real Madrid ever allowed it to happen.
