Jorge Mendes Champions Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal Over Mbappe for 2026 Ballon d’Or

Jorge Mendes Names Lamine Yamal as Clear Favorite for 2026 Ballon d’Or

Super-agent Jorge Mendes has publicly declared that Barcelona's rising star Lamine Yamal stands out as the best player globally and should claim the 2026 Ballon d’Or, surpassing Kylian Mbappe. Mendes expressed unwavering confidence in the young winger's talent after a lengthy meeting with Barcelona president Joan Laporta.

Mendes' Bold Endorsement

Following his two-hour dinner with Laporta, Mendes spoke to the press outside the restaurant, insisting there is no doubt who deserves football's top individual honor. Quoted by A Bola, he said: "The Ballon d’Or is for Lamine Yamal, without a doubt. The Ballon d’Or is for Lamine Yamal, he’s the one who deserves it most. He is the best in the world, by a wide margin, and you know it."

Yamal Shares His Own Confidence

The teenager has voiced similar thoughts recently during an interview with Universo Valdano, stating he and Mbappe might be the two best players worldwide but believes his achievements this year make him deserving of the award. He added: "Who would I give it to? The best player in the world. Honestly, maybe there are two of us, me and Mbappe. And I think I would deserve it this year because of what I've achieved."He also emphasized that anyone watching matches can see his quality clearly.

Outstanding Season Strengthens Yamal’s Case

Yamal’s credentials come from a standout campaign marked by major trophies and impressive personal stats. He was pivotal in Spain's triumph at the 2026 World Cup and played a key role as Barcelona won both La Liga and the Spanish Super Cup. His contribution last season included 24 goals and 18 assists across all competitions, making him a strong contender for football’s highest honor.

The winner of the 2026 Ballon d’Or will be revealed at a grand ceremony in London on October 26. This event marks the 70th edition of the award and is notable for being held outside Paris for the first time.
