Joao Pedro: Chelsea’s No.9 Poised for a Breakout Season in Premier League

Joao Pedro has earned recognition as one of the Premier League’s standout strikers. Former Chelsea forward Carlton Cole told GOAL that the Brazilian, currently wearing the iconic No.9 shirt at Stamford Bridge, could score in the "high double figures" this season. Pedro has already netted three goals in the 2026-27 campaign.

Transfer and Early Career

Pedro joined Chelsea in the summer of 2025 in a deal valued up to £60 million ($80 million), departing Brighton after impressing regularly with his goal output. Before Brighton, he spent formative years in England at Watford, having arrived as a highly talented teenager.

Now 24, Pedro has earned eight senior caps for Brazil. Although surprisingly left out of the 2026 World Cup squad by Carlo Ancelotti, he is quickly making up for lost time with strong domestic performances.

Support System and Playing Style

With English internationals Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers supporting him from midfield, Pedro rarely lacks service. His overall play has sharpened with experience; he’s learning when and where to make decisive runs.

He combines pace, power, and precision—traits crucial for success in England’s top flight. Some now rate him alongside Premier League stars like Erling Haaland.

Insights from Carlton Cole

“He’s doing really well, the boy. When he’s not playing, you see how much it affects the team,” said Cole. “He’s a big part of what [Xabi] Alonso is building. If used right and staying fit, I think he could get into high double figures this season. He’s definitely one to watch.”

Cole highlighted the positive influence of Pedro’s former teammate Danny Welbeck who offers support and helps him settle, adding: “Only Alonso knows exactly what encouragement Pedro needs, but Welbeck’s presence makes it a smart move for Chelsea to back him.”

Xabi Alonso’s High Praise

Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso compares Pedro to some of the game’s elite forwards. Having played alongside legends like Cristiano Ronaldo, Alonso believes Pedro stands among the Premier League’s top strikers.

“If you count the top strikers in the league, Joao is definitely there, alongside Haaland,” Alonso said. “He reminds me a lot of Karim Benzema. He’s good inside and outside the box, comfortable on his left side, strong in the air, intelligent and very complete. He’s still young, with room to grow, but possesses many outstanding qualities.”

Outlook and Upcoming Fixtures

Despite nursing a minor knee injury recently, Pedro remains confident. He aims to cement his place among the likes of Haaland, Harry Kane, and Kylian Mbappe as a feared striker in England.

Chelsea’s form dipped before the first international break of 2026-27, gathering just one point from nine available. They will look to bounce back when hosting AFC Bournemouth on October 10.
