Joan Garcia Takes Barcelona’s No. 1 Shirt for New Era in Goal

Barcelona have made it official. Joan Garcia is now La Liga-registered and will walk into the new season wearing the No. 1 shirt, a small piece of fabric that carries a very loud message about where he stands in the club’s plans.

According to Catalan outlet Sport, the registration went through early, a sharp contrast to last year’s rush to get him cleared just in time for the opening game against Real Mallorca. That frantic finish delivered his first official appearance for the club, born from Marc-André ter Stegen’s lower back injury, which qualified under La Liga’s rules as a long-term absence.

From emergency solution to standard bearer.

Garcia now inherits the number that defined Ter Stegen’s era at Barcelona, the jersey the German wore for years before his loan move to Ajax. Handing that shirt to a 25-year-old Spaniard is more than a cosmetic reshuffle. It’s a statement of trust, and a challenge. Barcelona are not hiding who they see as the man to anchor their season from the back.

The shake-up does not stop there. Wojciech Szczesny, who had been wearing 25 since arriving at the club, will now switch to 13, the number Garcia used last season.
