Jhon Lucumí Close to Juventus: Personal Terms Agreed
As August ticks toward its boiling point, Juventus find themselves exactly where they didn’t want to be: still searching for the final piece of a defence that creaked its way to sixth place last season, and running out of days to fix it.
At the centre of that search stands one name: Jhon Lucumí.
The Bologna defender has been a constant presence on Juve’s shortlist all summer, the headline act in their plan to refresh a back line that needs more authority, more calm, more personality. And now one important hurdle has been cleared.
Lucumí says yes to Juve
According to Friday’s report from Tuttosport, Juventus and Lucumí have reached an agreement on personal terms. The Colombian is ready to sign a five-year contract in Turin worth €2.5 million per season, with a further €1 million available in bonuses.
For Lucumí, it would mean a significant pay rise on his current Bologna deal. For Juventus, it means the player has done his part. He has chosen his next step and nailed his colours to the black and white mast.
This isn’t just a polite interest. Multiple outlets report that Lucumí is actively holding out for Juventus, turning down richer offers from elsewhere while he waits for the call from the Allianz Stadium. In a market where players often follow the biggest cheque, that stance is not a small detail.
Bologna dig in on the fee
There is, however, the other side of the table.
Bologna, buoyed by a strong season and well aware of the value of a prime-age, Serie A-proven centre back, are not in the mood to offer discounts. They are reportedly seeking as much as €25 million for Lucumí.
Only a few weeks ago, his €28 million buyout clause was in force. That clause expired in mid-July, but the figures being discussed show Bologna have no intention of letting him go on the cheap simply because the calendar flipped.
So the parameters are clear: personal terms agreed, fee still a problem. And all the while, the clock keeps ticking.
Turning down Turkey, waiting for Turin
The list of clubs Lucumí has rebuffed underlines just how firm his stance is.
Galatasaray and Besiktas both came forward with more lucrative proposals, yet the defender has, as reported, effectively told them no. The Besiktas angle is particularly striking: his former Bologna coach, Vincenzo Italiano, is now in charge there, a familiar face offering a soft landing in a new league. Still, Lucumí’s answer has been the same.
He has also been linked with Inter and several Premier League sides over the course of the summer. Those trails have cooled in recent weeks. The reason is simple: the player’s focus is on Juventus, and clubs sense it.
In a market often dictated by agents and opportunity, Lucumí’s position is unusually straightforward. He wants Juventus. Full stop.
Juventus stuck in the waiting room
The problem? Want is not enough.
Juventus are understood to be in a position where they must sell before they can bring in another central defender. The names floated as potential departures sketch the dilemma: Federico Gatti, Lloyd Kelly, Juan Cabal, or another member of the defensive unit could be moved on to make room and raise funds.
Until one of those dominoes falls, Lucumí’s move remains theory rather than reality. He waits. Juventus wait. Bologna wait, knowing that every day closer to the deadline increases the pressure on all parties.
The alignment is there: the player wants the club, and the club wants the player. The fee is known, the contract is ready. What’s missing is the trigger.
As the mercato narrows to its final weeks, the question is no longer whether Jhon Lucumí is ready to join Juventus.
