James Garner's Race to Recover for Everton's Premier League Start
Everton’s carefully laid pre-season plans have taken an early jolt. James Garner, one of last season’s standout performers, has undergone surgery on a groin problem and is now in a race against time to be ready for the opening week of the Premier League campaign.
The issue was picked up in the first days of pre-season, a worrying development given how central the 23-year-old has become to Sean Dyche’s midfield. Garner missed last weekend’s opening friendly against Dundee, with the club initially saying the problem would be assessed over the following days. Those checks led to a clear conclusion: he needed an operation.
Everton moved quickly. The club confirmed the surgery was successful and that Garner has already started his rehabilitation at Finch Farm. The internal message is optimistic. The target is to have him back in first-team training around the opening week of the season, though that remains dependent on how smoothly his recovery progresses.
In a statement, the club said: “The Blues midfielder has begun his rehabilitation at Finch Farm and is progressing as expected, with a return to first-team training being targeted around the opening week of the Premier League season, subject to his continued recovery.”
For Dyche, the timing is awkward. Garner’s injury comes just as Everton adjust to life without Idrissa Gueye, whose contract expired this summer and who will not be returning. One experienced midfielder gone, another temporarily sidelined. The recruitment department is already working on adding another body in the middle of the pitch; this setback only sharpens that need.
Garner’s absence was one of several notable omissions from the squad that travelled to face Bolton Wanderers on Saturday. Tyler Dibling sat out with what the club described as a “minor knock”, while Hayden Hackney, one of three summer signings, was also missing as he continues to be “integrated” into the group following his move from Middlesbrough.
There is less concern around those two. Everton expect both Dibling and Hackney to be involved in Tuesday’s friendly at Stoke City, an important step as Dyche shapes his options for the new season.
Garner’s situation is different. This is not about minutes in pre-season; it is about whether one of Everton’s key midfield pillars can hit the ground running when the real stuff starts. With Gueye gone and a new signing yet to arrive, the question now is whether the club can navigate the season’s opening weeks without the player who drove so much of their improvement last year.
